Mounties Unable to Overcome Early Deficit, Lose to Wells 5-2

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team was unable to overcome an early 3 run deficit as they fell to Wells College by a score of 5-2 on Monday afternoon.

Nick Lagnese (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) started for the Mounties and gave up 3 runs in the opening frame on 3 hits and a hit batter. Lagnese settled down after the rough first inning, keeping the express scoreless for the next 4 innings. The Mounties were able to scratch two runs back in the first two innings of play. In the first, Jeremy Iellimo, (Arnold, PA/Valley) hit a ground rule double to the right centerfield gap and Matthew McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/ St. Augustine Prep) followed with a double to right  that was nearly caught by the rightfielder, allowing Iellimo to advance only one base. Sam Keibler (Kittaning, PA/Kittaning) drove in the run with a ground out to second.

In the second, a walk and error put runners on the corners for catcher Douglas Smith (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa). Smith then drove a single through the left side of the infield to drive in the run. After the Smith RBI single, the Mounties were unable to execute to score any more runs, leaving 12 runners on base in the game. Lagnese allowed one more run in the 6th on a walk, sacrifice bunt and single up the middle. Douglas Cannon (Valencia, PA/Mars Area) pitched the final three innings for the Mounties, allowing 1 run in the 9th frame.

Lagnese took the loss allowing 4 runs on 7 hits a walk and one hit batter in 6 innings. Cannon threw 3 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. McCourt was the lone Mountie to record a multiple hit game, with a double in the 1st and a single in the 9th.

The loss moves the Mounties to 5-2. They will play Centenary College of New Jersey tomorrow afternoon in a 9 inning contest scheduled to begin at 3.
