CRESSON -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Volleyball team picked up their fourth consecutive win on Thursday night, as they beat Saint Vincent in four sets.
SeniorÂ
Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) registered a career-high with 47 assists, while JuniorÂ
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) registered her fourth double-double on the season to lead the Mounties in the win.
The first set went to Saint Vincent as they hit .135 compared to the .039 percentage posted by Mount Aloysius. The Bearcats put together three 5+ point runs in the set, including the final six points of the frame. 14 of their 25 points came via the kill.
The Mounties turned around in the second set, to limit their opponents to 15 points. While only committing three hitting errors, they used a 13-1 run to take a 15-7 lead. The only point that Saint Vincent scored in the stretch was thanks to a service error by Mount Aloysius. The teams traded points for the rest of the set, until Gibbons serving chance came up. The Mounties scored the last three points of the set during her turn to serve. Gibbons and SophomoreÂ
Ashlee Parrish (Northern Cambria, PA, Northern Cambria) ended the set with back-to-back kills to even the match at one set a piece.
Mount Aloysius started the third set much like they ended the second. They were able to score the first five points of the set as a cushion, which ended up being very useful. While Saint Vincent never took the lead, they were able to tie the set at 10, and were within three points, at 20-17, late in the set. Following an attack error by SVC's Emma Reeping, the Mounties scored the final four points of the set. After aÂ
Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA, Redbank Valley) ace, Parrish finished off the set with three consecutive kills, to give the Mounties a 2-1 advantage.
In set number four, Mount Aloysius again got out to an early advantage, taking a 4-0 lead. During the final set, the Bearcats were never able to tie, but were never more than five points removed from the Mounties. While Mount Aloysius only hit .175 in the set, they only committed three hitting errors, while SVC committed nine out of their total 50 attempts.
Gibbons led the Mounties with 17 kills on the night, while JuniorÂ
Ava Myers (Gallitzin, PA, Bishop Carroll) added 10. On the defensive end, Gibbons and JuniorÂ
Kylee Clawson (Altoona, PA, Altoona) both finished with 30 or more digs, and Myers added two blocks in the middle.
The win was the Mounties first over the Bearcats since at least 2009. The last time the Bearcats visited Cresson, the game went to five sets, with SVC winning 3-2.
Mount Aloysius will take their four game winning streak on the road, this weekend, as they travel to Elizabethtown. They will play two games on Saturday, first against Clarks Summit at 2 PM, then host, Elizabethtown, at 4 PM. The Mounties beat Clarks Summit last season, 3-1. They have not played E-Town since 2013.
