CRESSON -- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team won their first home game of the season on Tuesday night, as they beat Thiel, 6-2.
The Mounties controlled most of the game, as they outshot their opponents 33-6, and landed 18 shots on goal, compared to only three by the Tomcats. They also took 14 corner kicks.
The scoring started about midway throught the first half, whenÂ
Pau Aran (Barcelona, Spain, Colegio Inglés Playa del Carmen) foundÂ
Linus Westberg (Malmo, Sweden, Sundsgymnasiet) for his second goal of the season. Aran fed the ball in from the left wing, where Westberg one-timed it past the keeper. Just over two minutes later,Â
Joshua Devlin (Southend-on-Sea, England, Seevic College) would also score on a one-time shot, off a pass from teammate
Joshua Christie (Aberdeen, Scotland, Hazlehead Academy), to make it 2-0 Mount Aloysius.
With just under six minutes to go in the first half, Thiel committed a foul, just inside the box, that resulted in a Mountie penalty kick. Christie took the penalty kick attempt and rifled it past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-0. The goal was Christie's second of the season.
The Tomcats would get on the board with just under five minutes left in the half, as Evan Young scored his first of two goals. The score would stay there at the half, with the Mounties leading 3-1.
Thiel came out with some fire in the second half, and cut the lead to 3-2, just over a minute into the period, on Young's second goal of the game.
The game would stay close until the 70th minute, when Devlin would score his second goal of the game, Devlin currently leads the team in goals on the season, with five. That goal began a five minute and 52 second stretch that saw two more Mounties find the back of the net. FreshmanÂ
Rhett Pletcher (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) scored his first career goal on a header, that came as a result of a corner kick by
Nick Anagnostiadis (Sydney, Australia, St. Patrick's College). The final goal of the stretch came from
Anton Hoshovsky (Canberra, Australia, Radford College), for his first goal of the season.
Mount Aloysius was able to get appearances from 24 different members of the team, while five different Mounties scored goals. The six total goals tied a season-high for the Mounties.
Saturday will begin AMCC play for Mount Aloysius, as they travel to play nationally-ranked, Penn State Behrend. Penn State Behrend is currently undefeated and ranked #22 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Mounties will play them at 2:00 PM, as part of a Men's and Women's doubleheader, in Erie.
