Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer takes #22 Behrend to the Wire, Falls Late

ERIE -- The Mount Aloysius faced off against 22nd-ranked Penn State Behrend on Saturday afternoon in Erie. In the 2019 AMCC opener, Penn State Behrend scored on a penalty-kick in the 89th minute, for the only score of the game.

In a game that saw six of the seven total shots on goal saved, the Mounties ended up on the wrong side of the final score.

Both Mount Aloysius and Penn State Behrend were very limited on their scoring opportunities. In the first half, the Mounties put four shots on goal against the Lions, but were unable to get any past the keeper. The Lions put two on goal, against Tucker Hays (Watsontown, PA, Warrior Run), but he saved both. Each team tallied at least four corner kicks in the first half, as well.

The second half had much of the action take place in the midfield area. The only shot on goal for either team was the penalty kick, by PSB. The physicality of the game picked up, though, as Behrend tallied nine fouls and Mount Aloysius tallied 11 in the half.

With limited scoring chances in the game, the Mounties may have had one of the best. In the 67th minute, Lachie Back (Gordon, Australia, St. Piux X College) attempted a shot that went just high, following a well-played advantage scenario. The shot by Back was the last shot attempted by the Mounties in the game.

At 88:38, a foul was committed in the box by Luis Miravitlles (Barcelona, Spain, Oak House British School). The clock was stopped, and the foul was additionally determined a yellow card on Miravitlles. The foul led Nick Schwarzel to receive a penalty kick against Hays. The left-footed Schwarzel deposited the kick above the outstretched Hays, to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

With just over 1:20 on the clock, the Mounties pressed to get an opportunity to tie, but were unable to get a shot.

Mount Aloysius has not beaten Penn State Behrend since 2015, when they beat them once in the regular season and once in the AMCC Final, to give the Mounties their only AMCC Championship.

Following the 0-1 AMCC start, the Mounties will play one non-conference matchup at Albright on Wednesday, before returning home to host Pitt-Bradford, on Saturday.
