WINCHESTER, VA -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team played the first game of their three game weekend road trip on Friday night. The won a five set match at Shenandoah to start the trip with a win.
The Mounties were able to comeback from losing the first set, to take sets two and three, and eventually win in the fifth set.
Shenandoah was able to take set one, 25-20, as they were able to hit .225 with 16 kills in the set. With Mount Aloysius ahead 11-7 after a five point run, the Hornets went on a 10-3 run to get back in front. After trading a few points, Shenandoah finished off the set on a 6-2 run.
The Mounties came back in set two, behind a .286 hitting percentage. They only made four hitting errors during the set. Shenandoah had a 14-11 lead in set two, before Mount Aloysius was able to put together an 11-2 run to flip the set on its head. After scoring three of the final five points, they took the set 25-18.
Set number three also went to the Mounties, where they had 14 kills. The set as a whole was very competitive, but Mount Aloysius was able to put together two, four point streaks, to give them the momentum and win 25-20. This put them ahead in the game 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Mounties scored seven consecutive points, to take a 16-8 lead. Shenandoah was able to score 14 of the next 18 points, including eight straight, to put them ahead 22-20. The Hornets held on down the stretch, and finished off the set 25-22.
The fifth set, played to 15, started off with five straight points by the Hornets, followed by five straight from Mount Aloysius. Neither team was able to gain much advantage, as the set was again tied, at 9-9. From that point on, SophomoreÂ
Ashlee Parrish (Northern Cambria, PA, Northern Cambria) was able to pick up a kill to give the Mounties the serve back. Cue, Junior,Â
Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA, Redbank Valley). King was able to serve for the final five points of the game, including two of her game-high five service aces.
Along with King's clutch performance, the Mounties were also led by Senior
Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield), who recorded a season-high, 49 assists. JuniorÂ
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) recorded her sixth double-double of the season, with 24 digs and 19 kills. Parrish added 13 kills in the game. JuniorÂ
Kylee Clawson (Altoona, PA, Altoona) also added a game-high 31 digs.
The win was the Mounties' second straight victory and their second straight victory against Shenandoah. Exactly one year ago, they beat the Hornets at home in five sets.
Mount Aloysius will continue their road trip on Saturday, as they head to Lexington, Virginia, to take on Washington & Lee and William Peace. The tri-match will get started at 11:00 AM, as the Mounties will open with W&L.
