Mounties Falter at Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, VA -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team played the final two games of their weekend roadtrip to Virginia on Saturday. After finding the win column, on Friday, they were unable to secure a "W" on Saturday, falling to both Washington & Lee and William Peace.

GAME 1
The Mounties faced Washington & Lee, the host, at 11 AM on Saturday. Mount Aloysius got off to a slow start and really didn't have the chance to recover.

Set one went to W&L, behind the strength of a .625 hitting percentage. The Generals made zero hitting errors in the first set, as they finished with 15 kills in the set. The final score in set one, 25-12.

The Mounties showed some life in the second set, as they only committed three hitting errors. They were able to keep the set close, as the Generals held a 20-16 lead late. However, W&L scored five of the last six points, to take a 2-0 lead in the game.

In the final set, the Mounties continued to fight and stay in the game. With the Mounties ahead 12-10, the Generals scored to sparked a 10-2 run. The teams played the final 10 points even, but it was too late for Mount Aloysius as they fell, 25-19.

The Mounties were led by Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) who picked up 22 assists and Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) who registered 17 digs. They did not have a player reach double digits in kills against W&L.

GAME 2
Mount Aloysius gave one-loss William Peace all they could handle for three sets, before falling to the Pacers. For the second game in a row, the Mounties did not have a player get 10 or more kills.

In set one, the Mounties had a slim 20-19, but the Pacers scored six of the last eight points, to win the set 25-22. Set two turned out very similar to set one. As both teams traded points throughout the set, as the lead changed many times. The Mounties held their last lead, with only one point needed to win, at 25-24. Unfortunately, the Pacers were able to score the final three points to win the set, and take a 2-0 lead.

The Mounties jumped out to an early lead in the final set, to grab a 3-2 lead. William Peace followed that with a 6-0 run, to get ahead and put the Mounties away. Both squads traded runs the rest of the game, but the difference stayed at five points, as the Pacers won 25-20.

Pevarnik again led the team in assists, with 31. Kylee Clawson (Altoona, PA, Altoona), Gibbons, and Carly Swope (Big Cove Tannery, PA, McConnellsburg), all earned double digit digs, with Clawson registering a game-high, 20.

Mount Aloysius will travel to Lancaster Bible on Tuesday before coming back to Cresson to open up AMCC play, next Saturday. The Mounties will host Hilbert and Pitt-Bradford, as part of the opening AMCC Quad Match.
