Mounties Win Five-Set Thriller on the Road

LANCASTER -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team picked up their ninth win of the season on Tuesday night, when they traveled to Lancaster Bible. They were able to overcome being down one set to none and two sets to one, to win in five sets.

In set number one, the Mounties struggled after the game started 5-5. The Chargers were able to stretch the lead to 17-6 in the set. Mount Aloysius fell in the set 25-15, behind a .062 hitting percentage in the first set. 

Set number two was a major reversal of fortunes as Mount Aloysius hit .304 and registered 11 kills. Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) had five of her game-high 23 kills in the set. The Chargers struggled to a .061 hitting percentage, as they lost the set 25-15.

The third set went much like the first for Mount Aloysius. They produced single digit kills and had seven hitting errors. While LBC was able to string points together, the Mounties were not able to score more than back-to-back points, and it showed as the final score read 25-19.

The Mounties focused again in the fourth set, as they picked up a game-high 14 kills in the set, and hit .244. Mount Aloysius jumped ahead early in the set, 7-2. Lancaster Bible got the set back to 11-10, before the Mounties were able to score 10 of the next 12 points to get an advantage. While both teams traded points for the final points of the set, the Mounties held on, 25-18.

In the final set, Mount Aloysius hit an amazing .318 and did not commit a hitting error, as they held on to win 15-11. The Chargers hit .000 for the final set, as they registered seven kills, but also committed seven errors.

Gibbons led the Mounties, as she hit .373 while registering her 7th double-double. She picked up 18 digs to go along with her 23 kills. Senior Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) also earned a double-double with 11 digs and 41 assists. Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford) and Carly Swope (Big Cove Tannery, PA, McConnellsburg) also added double-digit digs, with 11 and 10, respectively.

Mount Aloysius returns to action this weekend, when they host their opening AMCC Quad Match, with Hilbert, La Roche, and Pitt-Bradford. The quad match will start at 1:00 PM. The Mounties were picked to finish third in the preseason polls, while Pitt-Bradford was picked to finish tied for first.
