Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Mounties Go 2-0, Gibbons Picks up 1,000th Dig

CRESSON -- The Mount Aloysius Volleyball team hosted the opening AMCC Quad Match of 2019 on Saturday afternoon, as they hosted Hilbert College, La Roche University, and Pitt-Bradford. The Mounties were able to go 2-0, as they played Hilbert and Pitt-Bradford.

Junior Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA, Bishop McCort) earned 12 digs in the first game, following that up with 25 in game two. With her last dig of the second set against Pitt-Bradford, she registered the 1,000th dig of her career. She became the fifth Mount Aloysius player in program history to reach 1,000 digs.

GAME 1
In the first game against Hilbert, the Mounties dominated. They hit a blistering .403 for the game, with five different players hitting over .425. Gibbons earned 12 kills in game one, to go along with her 12 digs. Ava Myers (Gallitzin, PA, Bishop Carroll) and Ashlee Parrish (Northern Cambria, PA, Northern Cambria) hit a combined .500 with 18 kills, split evenly. Senior Emma Pevarnik (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) had 31 assists to lead Mount Aloysius in that category.

GAME 2
Pitt-Bradford gave Mount Aloysius a great showing in game two, as the Mounties secured the victory by scoring the final three points of the fourth set. The Mounties outhit the Panthers in all but one set, on their way to the victory.

Mount Aloysius was able to slip by the Panthers in set one, 25-22. They were able to piece together two separate, four point runs, and scored four of the final five points of the set, to clinch a 1-0 lead.

Set number two saw the Mounties hit, a very good .243 and only commit five hitting errors. They also played great defense and limited UPB to seven kills in the set. They finished the set with dominant 25-14 score.

In the third set, the Mounties faced a three point deficit, 23-20, late in the set. Gibbons picked up two kills to go with a Parrish ace, to get the set back to 23 all. Bradford would score the next point to get one away from a win. The Mounties scored the next two points to take a 25-24 lead. The Panthers got some help from the Mounties that included a service error and hitting error, as they went to score the final three points and win the set 27-25.

The fourth and final set went the Mounties way, as they played it close the whole way. Each team had a run of five points or more in the set, as they once again found themselves tied late. Down 23-22, the Mounties picked up a kill from Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA, Redbank Valley) and Myers, to get back ahead. A final attack error from Bradford earned Mount Aloysius the final point they needed, to win the match.

Gibbons earned her second double-double of the day, with 14 kills and 25 digs. Parrish had a game-high 19 kills in Game 2. King also added 11 kills. Kylee Clawson (Altoona, PA, Altoona) led the team with 26 digs, while Pevarnik tied her season high, with 49 assists.

Mount Aloysius will return to action on Wednesday night, as La Roche makes another trip to Cresson, to face off head-to-head against the Mounties. The game will start at 7:00 PM. La Roche went 1-1 on Saturday, against both Hilbert and Pitt-Bradford.

Wednesday night's game is also Mount Aloysius' annual Pink Out Game.
