BRADFORD, Pa. -- After the Easter Holiday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team returned to the diamond for their AMCC opener, at Pitt-Bradford, on Monday. They got themselves into an early tie for first-place following a sweep of the Panthers.
GAME 1
- Mount Aloysius got out to an early lead in the first game afterÂ
Cody Smith (Loysville, PA, West Perry) came around to score, following a hit by pitch to start the game off.Â
Brayden Lackey (New Cumberland, PA, Cedar Cliff) drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left field to put them ahead 1-0.
-Â
Creek Miller (Lakewood, OH, Lakewood) started the game off strong on the bump for the Mounties, allowing only one hit through the first three innings, and picking off the only man to get a hit, in the third inning.
- In the top of the fourth,Â
Troy Emert (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) doubled the Mountie lead with a solo shot to left center, putting the Mounties ahead 2-0, halfway through.
- The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, all unearned, thanks to an error to lead off the frame. Miller almost got out of the inning allowing only one run, but a two-out double drove in the other two runs. 3-2, Pitt-Bradford.
- In the top of the fifth, Mount Aloysius answered back with a four-spot, coming on three hits and two Panther errors. They also stole three bases in the inning. The big inning gave the Mounties a 6-3 lead.
- Pitching for Mount Aloysius continued to lead them, as Miller threw two more scoreless innings, beforeÂ
Douglas Cannon (Valencia, PA, Mars Area) came into the game for the save. The Panthers never threatened as they only had one runner reach second base in the final three turns at bat. Cannon tossed a 1-2-3 frame, in the seventh, earning his, AMCC-leading, fifth save of the season.
GAME 2
- Smith got the game started into the Mounties' favor again, as he singled to lead off the game and came across to score with a two-out, wild pitch. 1-0 Mount Aloysius.
- The next few innings saw very little action as neither starting pitcher allowed a hit again, until the fourth inning.Â
Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA, Valley Area) singled to lead off the frame for the Mounties, but did not score.
- After a walk with a runner on third, in the bottom of the fourth,Â
Tanner Perrone (Lilly, PA, Penn Cambria) was relived by
Graham Spitz (Hagerstown, MD, North Hagerstown). Perrone only allowed one hit on the day in 3.1 innings, but walked five Panthers. Spitz allowed two singles sandwiched around an error, allowing two runs to score beforeÂ
Nick Lagnese (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin) came in, in relief. He induced two flyouts to get out of the inning without allowing any more runs.
- Neither team scored in the fifth inning. However, in the top of the sixth, Mount Aloysius put up a crooked number. Lackey drove in Iellimo for the first run, on a double, after Iellimo had been hit by a pitch. After Emert walked,Â
Joshua Brown (Manassas, VA, Osbourn Park) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Lackey to score the second run of the frame. Emert would score and Brown would move up to third on a passed ball. After aÂ
Tyler Suder (Boswell, PA, North Star) walk, the Mounties pulled off an incredible double steal, to score Brown from third, for the fourth run of the inning.Â
Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, VA, Prince William County) then pinch hit for Mount Aloysius, and promptly doubled to drive in Suder for the fifth run, putting the Mounties up 6-3.
- Following a scoreless inning by Lagnese, Mount Aloysius strung together three singles in the seventh to score another run. Brown's single drove in Lackey to make it, 7-3.
- Lagnese threw up another zero in the bottom-half and the Mounties added another marker in the top of the eighth.Â
Ryan Leonard (James Creek, PA, Tussey Mountain) singled with two outs to drive home Suder for the eighth Mountie run.
-Â
Rhett Frazier (New Paris, PA, Chestnut Ridge) came in to finish off the final two innings for Mount Aloysius, on the mound, after a leadoff walk in the eighth.
- The Mounties added an insurance run in the ninth inning, without recording a hit, courtesy of two Panther errors. The final score, after a scoreless ninth inning by Frazier, was 9-3.
Highlights
- Emert hit his, team-leading, third homerun of the season in game one.
- Brown added a hit in each game of the doubleheader, extending his hitting streak to seven games. In game one, he also added two RBIs.
- Mountie pitchers only allowed ten Pitt-Bradford hits on the day, five in each game.
- Mount Aloysius is currently tied for first place in the AMCC, with Alfred State and Penn State Behrend, who are also 2-0.
