Doubleheader Sweep Puts Mounties in AMCC Semi-final

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team continued their strong season, on Saturday, as they swept Pitt-Greensburg, in the opening round of the AMCC Tournament. The series victory puts the Mounties into the AMCC Semi-finals, which are set to begin on Thursday.

GAME 1
- Pitt-Greensburg started the game hot, as they produced six hits in the top of the first, giving them four runs on the board.
- In the bottom of the second, the Mounties loaded the bases, with two outs, down 4-0. Cody Smith (Loysville, PA, West Perry) battled before singling up the middle, driving in two runs, cutting the Bobcat lead in half, 4-2.
- UPG responded with two runs of their own, in the top of the third, on four hits. The Mounties brought in Seth Smith (Mapelton Depot, PA, Mount Union) from the bullpen to finish off the inning.
- The Mounties got back on the board, in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Suder (Boswell, PA, North Star) singled. Cody Smith followed up Suder with a triple to right-center field, driving in his third run of the game, making the game 6-3.
- Again, the Bobcats responded following a Mountie run, with one of their own, in the fifth. The registered three two-out hits, to push the lead back up to four runs, 7-3.
- In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Mounties put together another threat, as they loaded the bases with two-outs. Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, VA, Prince William County) came to the plate, as a pinch-hitter for the Mounties, roping a first-pitch double over the left fielder's head, clearing the bases and making it a one-run game, 7-6.
- After a scoreless top half of the sixth inning, the Mounties produced some more two-out magic. Brayden Lackey (New Cumberland, PA, Cedar Cliff) and Troy Emert (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) reached base, after the first two batters grounded out. Joshua Brown (Manassas, VA, Osbourn Park) then doubled to left field, driving in Lackey. Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA, Greenville) followed Brown with a bunt single, pushing Emert across, giving the Mounties an 8-7 lead. The Mounties then used a stolen base by Wentling to produce a third run, as the throw sailed into the outfield, allowing Brown to score from third, extending the lead to 9-7.
- While Seth Smith allowed two runners to reach in the seventh, he did not allow them to score, ending the game and earning the victory.

GAME 2
- Even with Game Two being a longer game, in innings, there were less scoring opportunities, as both pitching staffs saw quality performances. All five runs in the game were scored in different innings. The first score came in the bottom of the second inning, as Cody Smith singled in another run on the day, driving in Jared Houser (State College, PA, State College) from third base, putting the Mounties ahead 1-0.
- Pitt-Greensburg answered with a run, in the third, as they notched three singles, tying the game at one.
- In the fourth, Wentling walked with one out. Houser reached, as the next batter, on a throwing error. The throwing error allowed Wentling to come all the way around to score from first, putting the Mounties back in front, 2-1.
- Once again, the Bobcats responded in their next at-bat, using an error and two hits to tie the game at two, midway through the game.
- Neither team scored again, until the eighth inning. Mount Aloysius squandered two opportunities, in the sixth and seventh, when they put their leadoff runner in scoring position, but failed to score.
- However, in the eighth, with one-out, Suder doubled to left field, giving the Mounties runners at second and third. Cody Smith drove in his fifth run of the day, as he hit a sacrifice fly to left field, driving home Wentling from third, for the go-ahead run.
- In the ninth,  came in for the save. After giving up a hit to the first batter, he produced three ground ball outs, giving the Mounties a 3-2 victory and earning his seventh save of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Cody Smith provided five RBIs on the day, giving him a total of 13 RBIs on the year. He tallied three hits over the two games, as well.
- Seth Smith improved his record to 2-1, as he threw 4.1 innings of one-run baseball, out of the bullpen, in Game One. The lefty struck out four Bobcats.
- Game Two starter, Creek Miller (Lakewood, OH, Lakewood), struck out four batters, over 8.0 innings of work. He scattered ten hits, while allowing two runs (one earned).
- Five different Mounties had two or more hits in a game, over the course of the day. Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA, Valley Area) was the only Mountie to have multiple hits in each game.

UP NEXT
Mount Aloysius awaits the winner of the #2 Penn State Behrend-#7 Pitt-Bradford series. The two teams split on Saturday and will play Game Three on Monday. The semi-final series is set to begin on Thursday. If Penn State Behrend wins, the Mounties will travel to Erie, but if Pitt-Bradford wins, the Mounties will host the Panthers.
