ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The 2021 season opened on Saturday for the Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team, as they traveled to Rochester, N.Y., to participate in the Doug May Memorial Classic, hosted by RIT and SUNY Brockport. The Mounties took on RIT on Saturday, earning a tie against the Tigers.
Leaders
- Seven different Mounties attempted a shot, withÂ
Colby Snyder (Hagerstown, MD, Washington County Technical) andÂ
Logan Walerysiak (Johnstown, PA, Conemaugh Township) each finding the back of the net.
-Â
Luke Priestley (Edlesborough, England, Aylesbury Grammar School)Â had a game-high, nine saves, to lead both goalies, in 110 minutes of action.
How It Happened
- RIT got ahead early, scoring just over a minute into the game. On a change in transition, they fit a pass through the Mountie back line, which made a breakaway opportunity, giving them a 1-0 lead.
- The Mounties tried to produce some offense, as the half continued. They were called for two offsides, just under three minutes apart. However, in the 18th minute, they got a corner kick. While the initial try did not score, the scrum by the net allowed Snyder to score the first goal of the season for the Mounties, tying the game at one.
- Only three shots were saved for either team over the rest of the first half, leaving the game tied at one through 45 minutes.
- In the second half, Mount Aloysius received a free kick opportunity near midfield.Â
Connor Pielmeier (Duncansville, PA, Hollidaysburg) booted it near the goal, allowing Walerysiak to clean up the bounce, putting the Mounties ahead, 2-1, in the 48th minute.
- Priestley would save four more Tiger shots, before they scored their second goal of the game, in the 64th minute. The goal tied the game at two.
- Over the final 26 minutes of regulation, the Tigers put two more shots on goal, both saved by Priestley, while the Mounties were unable to attempt any more shots. The lack of scoring sent the game to extra time.
- During the first overtime period, RIT took one corner kick and one shot, as both teams played even, sending the game to a second overtime. The second overtime turned in similar results, with each team having limited scoring opportunities, ending the game in a draw.
