PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Led by an outstanding shooting performance from
Jason Coronado (Orlando, FL, Ocoee), the Mount Aloysius men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a 87-74 victory over host Carlow University on Wednesday night.
Leaders
- Coronado led all scorers with 27 points and was especially sharp, going 5-of-6 from long distance, 4-of-5 at the free-throw line, and 9-of-12 overall, while also grabbing seven rebounds.

De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin) came off the bench to contribute a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and he blocked three shots.
- In his first start for the Mounties,
Will Hagwood (Willowick, Oh., South) was also in double figures with 17 points and added six rebounds and three assists.

Alphonso Morrow (Baltimore, Md., Parkville), in 25 minutes of action, recorded ten points.

Trent Ramirez-Keller (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg), also making his first start, added seven points and three assists, and was effective on defense with a team-high five steals.
How It Happened
- Coronado started his big night early, scoring the Mounties first six points, as they led 6-4 after the first two minutes. Mount Aloysius owned a slight advantage until Carlow took over the lead on a three-pointer, 14-12, at the 12:45 mark. The Mounties answered back, however, and regained the advantage on a Morrow layup at the midway point in the half, 18-17. Morrow then scored four more points to give Mount Aloysius a five-point margin, 22-17.
- The Mounties increased the difference to seven points, 29-22, with about five minutes remaining in the half. At the 3:00 mark, Carlow got within two points, 32-30, but then then the Mounties would close the half with their most significant run of the period - ten straight points - to make it 42-30 at halftime.Â
- In the opening two minutes of the second half, Hagwood scored four points to expand the margin to 13 points, 46-33. As the half progressed, the Mounties continued to maintain their lead, even increasing it to 62-44 after back-to-back three-pointers from Coronado at the 11:38 mark. Then, ten minutes into the half, they reached a 20-point difference, 64-44.
- In the final ten minutes of the game, the closest Carlow would get was within 12 points - at 5:00 and 2:45. During this segment of the game, Haggans in particular came through, scoring ten points. The Mounties ultimately cruised to a 87-74 victory for a 1-0 start this season.
