Men's Basketball suffers narrow loss to La Roche

CRESSON, Pa. -- Mount Aloysius maintained a lead for most of the game, but a persistent La Roche University pulled out a 74-72 win Wednesday night.

Leaders
- Wesley Ayers (Independence, VA, Grayson County) finished with a career-high 24 points, including three 3-pointers.
- Imil Britt (Johnstown, PA, Greater Johnstown) was also in double figures with 16 points and handed out three assists.
- Dwayne Jones (Philadelphia, PA, Greater Johnstown) came off the bench to contribute 11 points and seven rebounds.
- Jason Coronado (Orlando, FL, Ocoee) added nine points and a team-high five assists.

How It Happened
- The Mounties got off to an outstanding start, scoring the first 11 points of the contest. After La Roche scored five points, the Mounties increased the lead to 15-5 at the fifteen-minute mark.
- At the eleven-minute mark, the Mounties began a 9-0 run, capped with a three-pointer by Ayers, to gain a 20-point advantage, 30-10. As the half progressed to its latter stages, the Mounties maintained a double-figure lead. La Roche was able to get closer, however, and was down by 13 points at halftime, 45-32.
- The Mounties struck first in the second half with jumpers by Ayers and Coronado to increase the margin to seventeen points, 49-32. The game tightened, but the Mounties were still leading by thirteen points at the 12:42 mark, 58-45.
- But over the course of several minutes, La Roche chipped away at the Mounties' advantage, eventually tying the game with about four minutes remaining, 67-67.
- During the final three minutes, Jones stole the ball for a fast break dunk to put the Mounties ahead again, 69-67. However, La Roche scored twice to regain the slight lead, 71-69.  La Roche then increased the lead to four points but Ayers hit a clutch three-pointer to put the Mounties within just one point, 73-72. The Mounties had several looks during the last seconds but unfortunately could not convert and fell by a final score of 74-72.

Into the Box Score
- The Mounties led in field-goal percentage, 46.2 percent to La Roche's 41.5 percent.
- Both teams took care of the ball, with each limiting their turnovers to ten.
- The free throw disparity had an impact, however, with the Mounties just hitting 5-of-11 for 45.5 percent, compared to La Roche's 15-of-20 for 75 percent.

Up Next
- The Mounties have a well-deserved break until they travel to Pitt-Greensburg next Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
