How It Happened
- After the first two innings were scoreless, Grove City led off the third inning with a solo homerun, putting them ahead, 1-0.
- In the bottom of the third, the Mounties scored three times. Wentling and Suder started the inning with singles. Quade then tried a suicide squeeze, but placed the ball perfectly, allowing him to reach base with a hit and scoring Wentling. Next, on a double steal play, the catcher attempted to throw out Quade at second, but the ball got away and allowed Suder to score.Â
Zack Peck (Huntingdon, PA, Huntingdon) drove in the third run on a sacrifice fly, giving them the third run.
- Mount Aloysius added two more in the bottom of the fourth, as Suder and Quade produced back-to-back doubles, afterÂ
Jared Houser (State College, PA, State College) reached on an error. Quade's double scored both Houser and Suder, putting the Mounties ahead, 5-1.
- Grove City put more runs on the board, in the seventh. After a leadoff double, Wolverine second basemen, Luke Vittone hit his second homerun of the day, cutting the Mountie lead in half. The Wolverines added two more hits, with a two-out single pulling them within one, 5-4.
- The Wolverines kept the pressure on, in the eighth, as the first two runners reached. They used a squeeze to push across the tying run, then used a single to score the go-ahead run, giving them a 6-5 lead.
- In the bottom of the eighth,Â
Troy Emert (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) led the inning off with a single, thenÂ
Joshua Brown (Manassas, VA, Osbourn Park) doubled off the right field fence, giving the Mounties two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Houser followed them with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, moving both runners up and tying the game at six. Wentling followed him with a single to left field, that drove in Brown for the go-ahead run.
-Â
Seth Smith (Mapleton Depot, PA, Mount Union) threw a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the victory.
