Offense Propels Mounties Past Squirrels in Three-Game Set

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled to Virginia, over the weekend, to take on Mary Baldwin University in a three-game series. Two games were played on Saturday before the series finale was played on Sunday. After splitting the first two games of the series, the Mounties took the rubber match on Sunday.

Leaders
- Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, VA, Prince William County) hit two homeruns on the weekend, driving in six runs in the process.
- Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon) threw his first career complete game in the second game on Saturday. In 7.0 innings, he scattered seven hits while allowing three earned runs.
- Zack Peck (Huntingdon, PA, Huntingdon) also hit his first homerun of the season while driving in four runs.

How It Happened
Game One
- The Squirrels jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second inning, McCleester cut the MBU lead in half, with a solo homerun. The homer was his first in a Mountie uniform.
- Following the McCleester homerun, Mary Baldwin plated four runs in the bottom of the second, extending their lead to 6-1.
- Bell hit his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the fifth inning. Driving in two runs, the Squirrel lead was cut to 6-3.
- MBU responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, stretching the lead back to five. Neither team would add any runs, leaving the final score at 8-3.

Game Two
- Both teams were held scoreless over the first three frames. Mount Aloysius struck the first blow, as Jared Houser (State College, PA, State College) singled to drive in Joshua Brown (Manassas, VA, Osbourn Park). Houser was followed by Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA, Greenville) who doubled to drive in a run. Wentling scored the third run in the inning on a successful steal of home. 3-0 Mounties.
- After MBU got a run back on a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth, the teams were both scoreless in the fifth. Mount Aloysius then added four runs in the sixth inning. Suder doubled in Houser for the first run of the frame. Bell added his second dinger of the day, driving in another two runs. Peck immediately followed up Bell with a round-tripper of his own, making it 7-1 Mounties.
- The Squirrels scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was not enough, as Quade kept them off the board in the seventh to finish off the complete game.

Game Three
- The scoring started early in game three, as the Mounties scored twice in the top of the first. Iellimo scored on an error, then was followed in by Bell who scored on a single by Peck. MBU answered with one in the bottom half of the inning, making it 2-1 Mounties.
- Iellimo drove in a run in the top of the second inning, on a sacrifice fly, making it 3-1 Mounties. Mary Baldwin responded again, this time with three runs, two coming on a homerun and another coming on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. 4-3 MBU.
- Mount Aloysius would be the next to score, scattering seven runs over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Bell, Peck, and Troy Emert (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) all drove in two runs over the stretch.
- The Fighting Squirrels made the game interesting, scoring one run in the seventh inning, one run in the eighth inning, then tacking on three runs in the bottom of the ninth, before being shutdown by Andrew Lazor (New Enterprise, Pa., Northern Bedford) who earned the save with one strikeout to finish off the game., 10-9 Mounties.

Ring the Bell
- Bell had a huge series, as he went 4-for-9, including two homeruns and a double. He also reached base on two other occasions, by virtue of two walks. Bell was a major run producer, driving in two runs in each of the three games and scoring four runs.

- Saint Vincent is returning from their spring trip at the RussMatt Invitational in Floriday, having gone 4-2 for the week.
