Mounties beat Waynesburg in Season Opener

EBENSBURG, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's tennis team opened the season with a 6-3 victory over visiting Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon, taking two of the three doubles matches and closing with four singles wins.

Leaders
- Kierra Mountain (Roaring Spring, PA, Central), Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, Pa., Southmoreland), and Campbell McCann (Pittsburgh, Pa., Avonworth) all won twice on the day, in both singles and doubles.
- Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA, Somerset) teamed with Mountain for a win at first doubles.

How It Happened
- Davis and McCann earned their first career doubles win as a team at the #2 position, defeating Waynesburg's Yumin Lee and Sarah Yim, 8-1. Sines and Mountain followed with a dominant 8-2 win at #1 doubles over Hayley Sweeney and Marina Hastings. The Mounties fell in third doubles, meaning they held a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.
- McCann continued her excellent play with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at #4 singles. In her collegiate debut, Davis clinched the overall match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Yumin Lee. This gave Mount Aloysius its fifth point as it earned a default at the #6 singles position.
- Mountain continued where she left off from her all-conference play from last year, defeating Marina Hastings 6-1, 6-1 and giving the Mounties its sixth point on the day.
- Sines battled at the tough #1 position, especially in the first set, but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-1. Halle Clark (Williamsport, PA, Williamsport), making her first college start, also competed well in the first set of her #5 singles match, but lost 6-4, 6-2, resulting in an overall match score of 6-3.

Up Next
- Mount Aloysius was originally scheduled to travel to McDaniel College Sunday, but the match was canceled due to impending rain. Instead, the Mounties will begin conference play when they face Pitt-Bradford on the road on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
