Volleyball Gets First Win of Season

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Saturday, the Mount Aloysius Women's Volleyball team hosted a non-conference tri-match with Clarks Summit and La Roche. The Mounties split on the day, but did earn their first win of the 2022 season.

Leaders
- Ashlee Parrish (Northern Cambria, Pa. / Northern Cambria) led the Mounties with 21 kills on the day, including a game-high, 11 kills in the win against Clarks Summit. She also led the team in digs with 29 total.
- Kiersten Szpala (Ebensburg, Pa. / Central Cambria) finished with six blocks, on the day, all of which came in the Mounties' loss to La Roche.  had five blocks, three in the loss and two in the team's win.
- Sydney Lechner (Bellwood, Pa. / Bellwood-Antis) had four aces in both games, giving her eight total on the day. The Mounties had 21 as a team over the two matches.

How It Happened
Game One vs. Clarks Summit
- Mount Aloysius dominated from the beginning. Over the course of the three set, the Mounties only allowed 26 total points for the Defenders. They won set one, 25-9, before blowing out Clarks Summit in set two, 25-4.  pushed the Mounties into a big lead in the second set, serving a whopping 15 straight times, as the Mounties got a big 16-2 lead.
- In the third set, the Defenders gave a tougher test, but ultimately not enough as the Mounties finished them off, 25-13.

Game Two vs. La Roche
- Set one went down to the wire, as the Mounties fell behind 15-12. After a timeout, they scored the next five points to jump ahead, 17-15. It went back and forth but the Mounties got big plays down the stretch and finished the set with a kill by Szpala, to win 25-22.
- In the second set, it started very close, as the Mounties held a 13-12 lead about halfway through. The team hit a rough patch, dropping 13 of the next 15 points to lose 25-15.
- After a quick 3-1 start in the third set by La Roche, the Mounties ran off 10 of the next 11 points to get out to a 11-4 lead. La Roche would only get as close as six points from there on out, as the Mounties went up two sets to one, with a 25-15 win.
- La Roche tied it up in the fourth set, as the teams played close again. The Redhawks held a five point lead at multiple points, but the Mounties kept fighting back. They closed it to 22-20, before La Roche scored the final three points to win, 25-20.
- The fifth set was back and forth, with there being six lead changes before the 15 point end. Big plays kept the Mounties' hopes alive, but La Roche came up with the final three points to steal a 15-13 road victory and win the game, three sets to two.

Into the Box Score
- While the Mounties did have more hitting attempts for the game, the Redhawks hit at a better percentage (.158-.114).
- The Mounties hit over .200 in the first, third, and fifth sets, all of which were their best sets scoring wise. In the second and fourth sets, they hit poorly, both under .020.
- La Roche also made an impact defensively, at the net. The Redhawks tallied 15 blocks in the contest. They also added 97 digs, as a team.

Up Next
- The Mounties will be back in the ACWC, on Tuesday, when they host Penn State Harrisburg.
- Mount Aloysius has lost the last three meetings with the Lions, but all three were away from home.
