Cresson, Pa. -- Mountie men's soccer captured the top seed for the AMCC conference championships while the women earned the #4 spot with wins over Penn State Altoona this Tuesday, October 24th.
Women's Game
How It Happened:
- A methodical first half held tense moments for both teams, as the Mounties and the Lions both needed a win or a tie to punch a ticket for the postseason tournament.
- Penn State Altoona's 17th minute corner kick saw the ball roll with inches of crossing the Mountie goal line, but was batted away in the shuffle to keep the game scoreless.
- Although the Lions put three of their four first half shots on target, goalkeeper
Courtney Vought (Somerset, PA, Somerset) kept the shut out alive to end the half 0-0.
- The second half saw the intensity rise, as Vought had to save four strong Lion attempts in just the opening 15 minutes.
- After 70 minutes of action, it was a
Jordan Mason (Hagerstown, MD, St. Maria Goretti) set-up that allowed for the
Sara Borlie (Kennett Square, Pa., Unionville) strike to find the back of the net, putting the Mounties up 1-0 with twenty minutes to play.
- Intense Mountie defense kept the Lions at bay despite consistent offensive pressure, and in the waning moments,
Natalie Despot (Hollidaysburg, Pa., Hollidaysburg) would score the finishing 89th minute blow for Mount Aloysius, ending the game 2-0 for the hosts.
Into The Box Score:
- Vought's nine saves marked for her highest count in any shut out this season.
- Penn State Altoona outshot the Mounties, earning ten attempts compared to six.
- Borlie led Mount Aloysius in shot attempts with three.
Men's Game
How It Happened:
- The Mounties needed little time to open scoring, coming out with an intensity that resulted in the
Sean Barrant (Portmore, Jamaica, Jonathan Grant) goal off the
Louis Bez (Bordeaux, France, Lycée Sainte-Marie de la Bastide) assist inside the first minute of play.
- Maintaining control, Mount Aloysius stayed comfortably within the Lion's side of the field, earning corner kicks and shot attempts until the 15th minute, when Barrant would again find the back of the net to put his team up 2-0.
- The visitors stayed in the driver seat, giving up just one Lion shot attempt at the end of the half, and starting the second off with their two goal deficit.
- Again pushing forward, the Mounties recorded five shots on goal in the opening 15 minutes of the half.
-
Martin Donner (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl) would extend the Mount Aloysius lead in the 73rd minute, putting his team up 3-0 with the clock steadily winding down.
- A late run of Lion corner kick opportunities would prove fruitless as Mount Aloysius would end the game victorious, securing the #1 seed in postseason play.
Into The Box Score:
- Mount Aloysius dominated the shot count, tallying twenty-five attempts in the contest compared to Penn State Altoona's four.
- Bez led the Mounties in shots with seven.
- Mount Aloysius's constant pressure forward resulted in more fouls than normal, with the visitors recording fourteen to the hosts' nine.
