GREENVILLE, Pa. -- On Saturday, the Mount Aloysius Women's Lacrosse team opened up their 2023 season, as they traveled to Thiel College. The Mounties fell to the Tomcats, 19-9.

Katie Figinski (Abingdon, Md. / Edgewood) led the Mounties with four goals, on her way to five total points.

Jordan Mason (Hagerstown, Md. / St. Maria Goretti), and
Shelby Smeal (Altoona, Pa. /Â Altoona), each added an assist.

Zoe Swank (Romeoville, Ill. /Â Romeoville), had a game-high, 14 saves.
How It Happened
- Thiel opened up the scoring swiftly, scoring three times in the first 2:13 of the game. After a scoring drought for both teams, Smeal got the Mounties on the board, cutting the lead to 3-1, with the first goal of her career. Thiel would score five more times over the final six-plus minutes of the first quarter, opening up a 8-1 lead after the first period.
- In the second quarter, the first three goals came within a minute of each other, featuring two Figinski goals sandwiched around a Tomcat score, making it 9-3. Thiel added three more goals in the period, extending their lead to 12-3 at the half.
- Mount Aloysius showed some life in the third period, as Geissler scored in the first minute, on a free position shot. Geissler added her second goal, just under the ten minute mark in the quarter, beforeÂ
Courtney Vought (Somerset, Pa. / Somerset) followed it up less than a minute later with her first goal, cutting the lead to 12-6. Thiel added two more markers, before both teams went the final seven minutes of the quarter scoreless.
- The fourth quarter saw all Mountie attempts to make up ground matched by the Tomcats. Figinski score two goals in the first minute and a half, but those were followed by two Thiel scores. Figinski added her fourth goal of the contest, with just under nine minutes remaining, but again the Tomcats matched, keeping the lead at 17-9. Thiel scored the final two goals of the match, the last coming with 3:07 remaining. The lead was too tall for the Mounties to overcome, falling, 19-9.
Into the Box Score
- While Thiel had a significant edge in shots and shots on goal, the only had a small advantage in turnovers. The Mounties turned it over 25 times, while the Tomcats turned it over 21 times.
- Thiel may have also one the two most significant categories, picking up 26 ground balls compared to 16 for the Mounties, as well as having a 19-9 advantage in draw controls.
