Mounties Win Series at Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. -- Over the weekend, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled to Staunton, Virginia, for a three-game series against Mary Baldwin. While originally scheduled for a double-header on Saturday followed by a single, nine-inning game on Sunday, the days were flipped due to weather and travel adjustments.

Leaders
Seth Smith (Mapleton Depot, Pa. / Mount Union) gave the Mounties their first win of the season, on the mound, throwing a complete game and allowing just one run. Smith scattered seven hits, while striking out six batters and not allowing a walk.
- Chris Hasse (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) followed up Smith with another complete game for the victory in Game Two on Sunday. He allowed six hits and struck out six, while giving up just one unearned run.
- Shortstop  picked up six hits on Sunday, with three hits coming in each game. He also scored four runs.
- John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey) got the first two starts of his career, on Sunday, going 3-for-8 and driving in two runs.

How It Happened
Game One - Saturday 3:00 p.m.
- Neither team scored in the first inning and the Mounties had a 1-2-3 top of the second before the Fighting' Squirrels put runs on the board. Mary Baldwin used two hits and a crucial Mountie error, to score four times and grab a 4-0 lead.
- The Squirrels added another run in the third inning, as a leadoff walk came around to score, putting the lead at 5-0.
- Mount Aloysius got on the board next, but not until after scoreless fourth and fifth frames. In the top of the sixth, Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. / Chopticon) walked to lead off the inning and Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, Va. / Prince William County) reached on an error, giving the Mounties two runners on with no outs. A sacrifice moved them both up a base before Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) singled to drive in Quade, cutting the score to 5-1. Griffith grounded out to shortstop, with one out, which allowed Bell to score from third. 5-2 Mary Baldwin.
- Unfortunately, the Squirrels answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, on three hits, to push their lead back to five runs, 7-2.
- After the Mounties threatened in the top of the seventh by getting two runners on, the Squirrels held them scoreless and added an insurance run in the bottom half, thanks to a leadoff homerun.
- In the eighth and ninth innings, the Mounties tallied one hit each, but left runners on base and did not score, falling 8-2.

Game Two - Sunday 12:00 p.m.
- Mount Aloysius got the game started quickly as Tyler Suder (Boswell, Pa. / North Star) singled to leadoff the game and subsequently stole second base. Quade would reach on an error with one out and steal second to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Bell singled to drive both runners in and give the Mounties a 2-0 lead before they would even play defense.
- The game would stay 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning. Smith, the Mountie starting pitcher, gave up two hits in the top of the first, but threw three consecutive 1-2-3 frames to get the Mounties to the fifth inning with the 2-0 lead.
- Smith's offense gave him some insurance in the fifth inning, as Houser and Rice led off with back-to-back singles. Suder reached on an error that allowed Houser to score, then Troy Emert (Rockwood, Pa. / Rockwood) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in James Rice (Leechburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic), giving them a 4-0 lead.
- After two more scoreless frames from Smith, the Mounties gave him two more insurance runs, in the top of the seventh. Rice led off with a double and Suder singled, putting runners at first and third. Emert hit another sac fly, scoring Rice. With one out and two runners on, Bell hit a sacrifice fly that scored Suder and gave the Mounties a 6-0 lead.
- Mary Baldwin scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, on a single to right field with two outs. The threat was neutralized, however, as the batter was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. While the run scored on the play, the Mounties still got the third out and ended the ballgame, 6-1.

Game Three - Sunday 2:30 p.m.
- Mount Aloysius threated in the top of the first inning, with both Suder and Emert reaching on singles. However, both made outs on the basepaths, leaving the Mounties scoreless. Hasse followed that with a scoreless frame, picking up all three outs via strikeouts.
- With one out in the second inning, Ryan Lynn (Butler, Pa. / Butler) put the Mounties on the board first with a solo homerun and a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, the Squirrels first batter reached on an error, which came around to bite the Mounties. With two outs and two runners on, they tallied a two-run single and grabbed a 2-1 lead.
- In the third inning, Rice led off with a walk and Suder followed him with a single before Emert moved them to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Quade singled to drive in Rice, scoring the first run of the frame. Bell would follow up Quade by getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Griffith then singled up the middle to drive in two runs, giving the Mounties the lead back, 4-2. Lynn succeeded Griiffith with a double that drove in two more runs, and he would advance to third on an error, giving the Mounties a four-run lead. Lynn would score on a Brown RBI groundout, giving them a 7-2 advantage.
- Quade added an RBI single in the fourth inning, adding an insurance run for Hasse. The Squirrels added one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 8-3.
- The two teams would combine for only two more hits in the game, as the pitching held the score to the final tally of 8-3, Mount Aloysius.
