Cougars Use Big Second Quarter to Defeat Mounties

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Thursday, the Mount Aloysius Women's Lacrosse team played their final game before spring break, as they hosted Chatham. The Cougars stayed undefeated, as the beat the Mounties, 16-4.

Leaders
- Katie Figinski (Abingdon, Md, / Edgewood) scored three of the Mounties' four goals, as she leads the team with 11 on the season.
- Jordan Mason (Hagerstown, Md. / St. Maria Goretti) had the other lone marker for the Mounties, while Shelby Smeal (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) registered an assist.
- Goalkeeper, Zoe Swank (Romeoville, Ill. / Romeoville), had a game-high, 10 saves.

How It Happened
- Both teams looked to find their rhythm early, as the first five minutes were scoreless. Figinski opened the scoring with 9:07 on the clock, to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead. In the next five minute span, Chatham scored six times, including three goals that came within 47 seconds of each other. They would lead at the end of the first period, 6-1.
- Chatham continued their success in the second quarter, keeping the Mounties scoreless and adding four goals of their own. They would head into the halftime break with a commanding 10-1 advantage.
- Less than 30 seconds into the third quarter, the Cougars added an 11th goal, giving them a ten-goal advantage and a running clock. Just under the nine-minute mark, Figinski gave the Mounties some life, as she scored on a free position shot, causing the time to stop again, 11-2. She followed that up with another tally, with the Smeal assist, to cut the Cougar lead down to 11-3, with 6:40 remaining in the period. Chatham scored two more times, sending the game to the final quarter, with a 13-3 score.
- In the fourth quarter, the Cougars continued their dominance, scoring the first two goals of the period, before Mason's goal on a free position shot with just over nine minutes remaining. The Mason goal made the score 15-4. Chatham added one more goal over the final nine minutes, giving them the 16-4 victory.

Into the Box Score
- Chatham held a significant advantage in shots, 31-18 for the game, and 26-9 in shots on goal.
- In addition to shots, the Cougars also turned it over less, committing 17 turnovers while the Mounties had 24. They also grabbed 20 ground balls and the Mounties only picked up 13.

Up Next
- The Mounties will take a two-week hiatus from play, spanning over Mount Aloysius spring break, which happens next week. They will return to the field, March 23, when they travel to Saint Vincent.
- Saint Vincent is currently 0-1 on the season, but will play four more games between now and their meeting with the Mounties.
- The two programs have met only one time previously, with the Bearcats winning, 18-4, back in 2020.
