Mounties Edged Out by Wells

AURORA, N.Y. -- Mount Aloysius hit the road to take on Wells College for a non-conference match, falling 2-3 to their hosts.

Leaders
Matthew Franz (Johnstown, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) picked up 20 kills for the Mounties, with Jason Freed (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) and Andrew Wlodarczyk (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) adding a combined 17 more.
- Sophomore Cole Romeika (Macedon, N.Y., Penfield) led the Mounties in assists with 36 for the contest.

How It Happened
- The first set started as a back and forth affair, both teams trading points until 15-13, where strong offensive play from Mount Aloysius generated a nine-point swing which included six kills and two aces. The Mounties sealed the set 25-14 with a kill from Landon Smith (Vestal, NY, Vestal), going in to the second with strong momentum.
- Wells bounced back in the next set, matching the Mounties efforts from the onset. Both teams struggled to open up the score, staying within four points of each other throughout the set. Even through 25 points, it would take back-to-back kills from Wells' Billy McCrae to seal the set for the home team, 28-26.
- Wells kept their momentum into the third, opening the set with a 6-1 lead bolstered by two service aces. The Mounties chipped away at the lead throughout the set, both teams swapping three and four point runs as play progressed. Once again coming down to the wire, it was Mount Aloysius who would find success with the offense late, taking the set 26-24 with kills from Freed and Logan Place (Lakeview, N.Y., Frontier).
- The fourth was a set defined by errors, with the Mounties gaining the early advantage 12-6 with contributions from a handful of poor attacks from Wells. However, a late set swing for the hosts came assisted by the Mountie's own troubles with errors, as Wells put seven points together to retake the lead. Wells kept the lead until the close of the set, sealed with a Mountie error at 25-22.
- Strong serving from Wells College determined the deciding set, where three service aces gave the hosts an early 9-4 lead. A five point run would seal the contests, with Wells finishing the fifth 15-8.

Into the Box Score
- Both teams stayed relatively even statistically in most categories, with each program tallying 66 digs across the event.
- Wells jumped out most notably in blocks, doubling the Mounties total, picking up ten to the visitor's five.
