Men's Soccer Shuts Out Bethany to Open 2023 Season

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team began their 2023 season at home, on Friday, when they hosted Bethany. They sought to avenge their season opening 2-1 loss to the Bison in 2022. The Mounties scored twice and kept the Bison off the board, earning a 2-0 victory.

Leaders
- Louis Bez (Bordeaux, France / Lycée Sainte-Marie de la Bastide) and Ryan Peddle (Tauranga, New Zealand / Tauranga Boys' College) each scored a goal for the Mounties.
- Goalkeeper, Luke Priestley (Edlesborough, England / Aylesbury Grammar School), stopped all four shots that came his way and earned the shutout.

How It Happened
- After an uneventful start, Bez got the action going in the 13th minute. On a free kick, Bez took a direct kick and put it just over the hands of the Bison goalie. It hit off the top bar and ricocheted off the back of the keeper and bounced into the goal, giving the Mounties an early 1-0 advantage.
- Mount Aloysius headed into the half with a 1-0 lead, as there were only three more shots on goal over the first 45 minutes.
- In the second half, each keeper had to make one save over the first 25 minutes, keeping the score at 1-0 into the 74th minute. Just past that mark, Sean Barrant (Portmore, Jamaica / Jonathan Grant) would find Peddle on a nice pass across the front of the goal box, where he would deposit it into the back of the net, extending the Mountie lead to 2-0.
- Priestley stopped one last Bison shot, in the 86th minute, and the Mounties squashed the subsequent Bison corner attempt to preserve the 2-0 score and earn the victory.

Into the Box Score
- The game was even in both shots and fouls. Each team attempted 11 shots with four of those being on target. Both teams were whistled for nine fouls a piece.
- Bethany earned themselves six corner kick chances, compared to only two for the Mounties, but they failed to convert on any of the chances.

Up Next
- The Mounties will play their second of three home games, on Sunday, when they host Buffalo State at 2 p.m. at Kelly Field.
- Sunday's contest will be the season opener for the Bengals. It will also be the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
