Mountie Tennis Splits With Green Terror

Westminster, Md. -- Mount Aloysius women's tennis picked up the win against McDaniel College, while the men fell to the Green Terror in Friday's combined meet.

Women's Meet

Doubles:

- Mount Aloysius jumped out to a strong start, with senior Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA, Somerset) and freshman Caylie Conlon (New Paris, PA, Chestnut Ridge) grabbing 8-2 victory at the one spot with constant net pressure and unreturned approach shots.
- Freshman Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) and sophomore Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland ) saw the match stay even through the first few changeovers, before Kitchen's reset lobs and Davis's sharp volleys carved out the 8-4 win.
- A loss at three doubles put the Mounties at 2-1 overall heading into singles.

Singles:

- Sines began singles proceedings at the one spot, with swirling wind proving tricky to figure out early in the match; with some footwork adjustments and blistered passing shots, Sines captured a steady 4 and 4 victory for the Mounties.
- Conlon likewise struggled with the weather early on, struggling to find the court with her forehand en route to an opening set loss.Committing to a more consistent playstyle and cautious point production, the Mounties captured two singles in a third set breaker.
- Kitchen's backhand proved the difference maker at three singles, earning her a commanding straight set victory through cross-court rallying and low passes on her opponent's approaches.
- Freshman Maria Runk (Broad Top, PA, Tussey Mountain ) took the court for the Mounties at five singles, evenly matched through the first set with her opponent. Runk's serve proved the difference maker in the tiebreak, earning a handful of free points down the stretch to push her past McDaniel 7-4. An adjustment from her opponent saw Runk's backhand peppered with pace, leading to a second set bagel and the match heading for a third set tiebreak. Refocused and prioritizing forehand control, Runk rallied back, punishing short balls and recommitting to serve percentages, winning the match in the waning daylight 10-6.

Men's Meet

Doubles:

-  Sophomore Zachary Johnson (DuBois, PA, DuBois Area) and junior Matt Jacobs (Somerset, PA, Somerset) had high point quality at one doubles, with strong movement and solid net exchanges from both teams, although the Mounties were unable to capture a game in effort.
- Two doubles saw more evenly matched play, with senior Tanner Beck (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield) and junior Hunter Reed (Shamokin, PA, Our Lady of Lourdes) embracing an even doubles battle all the way through a tiebreak. Both teams sought offensive control, breaking down one-up one-back alignments with effective poaching and finding low passes and aggressive lobs at will against two-up efforts. Reed's serve earned Mount Aloysius free points throughout, while Beck's forehand proved especially effective at punishing overextended net players. Serve proved the difference in the tiebreak, with McDaniel finding just a few more first serves to push themselves past the Mounties 7-4.

Singles:
- A baseline battle had Jacobs drop the first set at one singles 2-6, necessitating adjustments from the junior heading into the second. Taking the ball earlier and earlier off both wings, Jacobs battled throughout the set, converting a chasedown tweener winner late in the match which drew excitement from the crowd, and both teams. Still, struggles with holds proved the difference maker, and the second set would go the way of the Green Terror 6-4.
- Johnson's victory at three singles was a true all-court affair, mixing serve-volley with chipped net rushes and shortened baseline points. While multiple adjustments from his opponent saw the first set staying tight until Johnson earned a late break, the second set saw the Mountie's net presence turn overwhelming, giving the match to the sophomore 7-5 6-1.
- Reed's four singles match saw both players vying for approach control, with Mount Aloysius jumping out to a significant lead in the first set. However, positioning adjustments impacted Reed's lob efficacy, and struggles with passing shots saw the junior drop the match 5-7 3-6.
