Cresson, PA. -- Freshman
Caylie Conlon's (New Paris, PA, Chestnut Ridge) victory at three singles earned the Mounties their only win on the day, falling 8-1 to defending AMCC champions Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday, September 3rd.
Amid blistering midday heat, Mount Aloysius struggled with doubles play deep in the lineup, unable to contend with the baselining play of Pitt-Greensburg's pairings. Net control and forehand pressure kept the Mounties within a break heading past the 3-2 switch at one doubles, but struggles against the flat inside-out forehands of their opponents proved eventually insurmountable, giving the visitors a 3-0 team lead heading in to singles play.
Heavy groundstroke battles presented exciting tennis at one singles, with senior
Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA, Somerset) struggling to match her opponents consistency within pace exchanges. Two singles saw senior
Kierra Mountain (Roaring Spring, PA, Central) take an early 3-2 lead with forehand pressure and slice change ups from the backhand side, but fell to her opponent's steady depth creation. Conlon took home three singles for the Mounties, outlasting her opponent in a battle of slow consistency and short slices. Four singles saw freshman
Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) weather storms of aggressive Pitt-Greensburg forehands directed towards her backhand, but struggles with returning bled into service games, pushing Kitchen to a 2-6 3-6 defeat. Finally, sophomore
Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland) and senior
Campbell McCann (Pittsburgh, PA, Avonworth) both contended with form changes amidst steady baseline play from their opponents at five and six singles respectively.
