Aurora, N.Y. -- Mount Aloysius women's basketball improved their conference record with an 85-28 win over Wells College this Monday, January 15th.
The Mounties jumped out to a quick start in the contest, securing a 26-6 lead after the first ten minutes of play. Freshman guard
Calaya Holland (Upper Marlboro, Md., Dr. Henry A. Wise) would hit her highest scoring mark of the season, leading the Mounties with 18 points on 8-12 shooting. The Mounties would focus their offense towards the perimeter, shooting a season-high 41 threes as a team. Struggling slightly with shooting percentages, the Mounties made up for cold streaks with aggressive control of the boards, grabbing 16 more rebounds than the Express across all four quarters. Junior guard
Hailey Drutarosky (Freedom, Pa., Sewickley Academy) would lead the Mounties in this effort, pulling down 13 of the Mounties 55 rebounds for the game.
The Mountie defensive effort was stifling, holding Wells to single-digit scoring marks in the first three quarters. Freshman guard
Angelina Kohlwaies (Lake Worth, Fla., Cardinal Newman) was especially active, leading her team in steals with 6. Kohlwaies would also contribute to the Mounties effective ball movement, recording a team-high 8 assists. Mount Aloysius would record 19 more assists than the Express, and would lead their hosts in every statistical category except free throw percentage, where Wells would go perfect from the line.
Mount Aloysius currently sits at sixth in AMCC standings, while Wells College occupies the tenth spot on the list. Due to inclement weather postponing scheduled games, the Mounties continue their conference campaign with a quick turnaround, hosting Pitt-Greensburg this Wednesday, January 16th. The Bobcats enter the contest 7-8 overall and 5-3 in conference, coming off an 87-51 win over Pitt-Bradford. Pitt-Greensburg currently sits at fifth in AMCC standings.
