Cresson, PA -- The Mount Aloysius men's and women's soccer program both earned AMCC victories this Tuesday, Oct. 1, against the Carlow University Celtics.
Men's Game
The Mountie men wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead, with defender
Martin Donner (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl) navigating the slippery conditions inside the first three minutes, converting a header to put his team up a goal. Maintaining possession inside the visitors' half, forward
Louis Bez (Bordeaux, France, Lycée Sainte-Marie de la Bastide) would score again for the Mounties six minutes later, giving the hosts a two goal advantage. The first half would progres with more Mountie offensive pressure, eventually yielding a 26th minute score from
Braden Callahan (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg), the final goal of the half.
The second half would be Mountie dominance in full display, as the hosts would pour in three goals just ten minutes after halftime. Defender
Hippolyte Delhaes (Bayonne, France, Lycee Saint-Louis VIlla Pia) would score the first of the three, while assisting on the other two goals from Callahan and
Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain, Putnam Science Academy). Unable to stop the hemorrhaging, Carlow would give up another Callahan goal, giving the Mountie his first hat trick of the year. Now leading by seven, the Mounties would have substitutes
Bill Dohren (Stockholm, Sweden, Rudbecks Gymnasium) and
Andrew Dillon (Cresson, PA, Penn Cambria) come alive, combining to score four more goals as the game came to a close. With a thirty-five to one shot advantage and seven players earning goals, the Mounties would end the contest in an 11-0 win over the conference opponent.
Women's Game
The women looked to follow the men's strong performance, coming out firing with a handful of good looks at the goal in the opening fifteen minutes of play. Despite a much more back-and-forth tenor to the game, the Mountie women held strong in the first, defending while constantly pushing forward, until a 27th minute shot from midfielder
Jordan Bailey (Crofton, Md., South River) would open up scoring for the hosts. Galvanized by the goal, the Mounties would increase their aggression, with Bailey converting again in the closing minutes of the half, with forward
Natalie Despot (Hollidaysburg, Pa., Hollidaysburg) earning the assist on both Bailey goals. While Carlow looked to finish the half without any more misfortunes, a late corner kick from the Mounties would be put in by forward
Sara Borlie (Kennett Square, Pa., Unionville) to send the hosts into halftime up 3-0.
Carlow would come out of halftime with renewed defensive vigor, withstanding Mountie shot attempts early while attempting to even the score. A foul near midfield would put the Celtics back in the game, as the visitors would drive the ball high over the Mountie defense, chipping the goalie to bring the score to 3-1 in the Mounties' favor. Looking to respond quickly, a long run from forward
Brooke Thomas (Altoona, Pa., Altoona) would again push the Mountie lead to three as she would find the back of the net. While Carlow would find another goal in the closing minutes of the game, the damage was done, and the Mounties would claim the 4-2 win in their second AMCC contest of the year.
