Mounties Trounce Wilson to Open Season

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team defeated the Wilson College Phoenix this Wednesday, Nov. 13, to open the 2024-2025 season.

The Mountie defense was flowing early in Wednesday's contest. Holding the hosts to just 28% shooting from the field in the first half, last year's AMCC defensive player of the year Molly Kosmack (Homer City, Pa., Homer-Center) continued her interior dominance, recording three of her four blocks for the game in the second quarter. Kosmack would also lead her team in scoring and rebounds, putting up 21 points on 73% shooting with 12 rebounds. The Mountie perimeter defense would also be firing on all cylinders, as the team would record 17 steals across the 40 minutes of action, with forward Angelina Kohlwaies (Lake Worth, Fla., Cardinal Newman) and guards Annalyn Isaacs (Mars, Pa., Mars) and Paris Dugan (Dover, Pa., Dover) each grabbing three a piece.

The Mounties found strong success from an offensive triumvirate, with Kosmack's interior play, Isaac's perimeter threat, and guard Jade Love-Morris (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown)'s transition play carving out a 15 point lead for the visitors going in to halftime. The third and fourth quarter would hold an uptick in offensive efficiency, with the Mounties improving their shooting from behind the arc to 45% across the second half, expanding the separation between the two programs to as much as 26 points going in to the closing minutes. The Mounties earned their greatest advantage from Wilson's struggle with ball security, picking up 29 points on as many turnovers from the Phoenix. A final Mount Aloysius steal would end the contest in favor of the visitors, 92-72, marking the first win of the season for the women. The young team would also see five freshman score their first career points for the Mounties, with Mariah Hall (New Enterprise, Pa., Northern Bedford), Ashlie Weaver (Schellsburg, Pa., Chestnut Ridge), Anna Burkey (Summerhill, Pa., Forest Hills), Brionna Brown (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley), and Masie Reed (Shamokin, Pa., Our Lady of Lourdes) all scoring from the field.

The Mountie women take to the road to participate in this year's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Tournament hosted by York College this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16. The Mounties first round opponent will be the Spartans, who enter the contest 1-1 on the season, coming off a 52-66 loss to McDaniel.
