Mounties Eclipse Phoenix in Double OT Thriller

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's basketball program defeated the Wilson College Phoenix (1-4) in double overtime this Wednesday, Nov 20, behind a career high 36-point performance from senior forward De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA).

The Mounties would open up with a remarkably efficient first half shooting the ball, despite facing significant struggles maintaining possession. The visitors would record an impressive 62% shooting from the floor, while hitting 50% of their deep shots, outpacing the first half field goal percentage of Wilson by more than 20%. However, Wilson would stay in the game with strong defense, forcing 16 turnovers in the first half out of the visitors, giving the hosts 15 more shot attempts than the Mounties. The Phoenix also kept pace with strong outside shooting, also hitting 50% of their threes on ten more attempts. Guard Will Hagwood (Willowick, Ohio) put together a strong first half for the Mounties, scoring 11 points and grabbing 5 rebounds across the opening twenty minutes. Hagwood would end with 23 points while leading his team in rebounding with 14.

Going into the second half facing a five point deficit, the Mounties would control the ball with more security, but struggle to maintain the efficiency they had opened with. Shooting just half as accurately as they had in the first half, solid defense and rebounding would put the Mounties in the lead after five minutes of play, and the teams would stay within four points of each other for the remainder of regulation. Up two with under a minute to play, the Mounties would give up a layup to even the game, and a late game jumper would be off target, ending regulation with the teams tied at 75-75.

Despite a strong start in the first overtime, which saw the Mounties go up four points with just over two minutes to play, Wilson fought back, converting a crucial and-1 with under a minute to play to again tie the game at 83-all. With the game up for grabs going into the second five-minute overtime period, it would be Haggans who would set the tempo for the Mounties, picking up two layups inside early to put his team ahead from the outset. Haggans would dominate the second overtime, scoring seven of the Mounties' fifteen 2OT points, ending with a team high 36 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Haggans's scoring output was the highest in his four-year Mount Aloysius career, helping the visitors capture the 98-90 victory after fifty minutes of basketball. Mount Aloysius improves to 2-2 this season.

The Mountie men hit the road this weekend, traveling to West Virginia to take on Bethany College. The Bison enter the contest undefeated at 3-0 this season, coming off a 90-82 victory over Penn State Shenango.
