Hamburg, N.Y. -- Mount Aloysius women's basketball finished out the regular season with a 54-48 win over Hilbert College this Saturday, February 17th.
The low scoring affair was characterized by hard nose defense from both teams, resulting in poor shooting efficiency and frequent empty possessions both ways. Freshman forward
Molly Kosmack (Homer City, Pa., Homer-Center) was the only Mountie to reach double figures in points, leading her team with 10. Kosmack's performance on the defense end was one of her strongest of the year, blocking seven shots in 36 minutes of action.
The Mounties would hold Hilbert to single digit scoring in the first and second quarters, taking a 14 point lead into halftime. The Mounties would shoot 40% from the floor, including 33% shooting from deep across the first half, with offensive output steadily falling after halftime. Despite the team struggles from deep, guard
Paris Dugan (Dover, Pa., Dover) would shoot the ball effectively, going 2-3 from behind the arc.
Hilbert shooting remained consistent throughout the game while the Mounties suffered a significant drop in the third and fourth quarter. Held to seven points in the third, the Mounties would be outscored by eight across the final 20 minutes of action, while shooting just 28% from the floor and 9% from three. Defense would maintain the Mountie lead, earning the visitors 14 points off turnovers while giving up just six. Although outrebounded by 12, the Mounties kept their opponents to 30/25/83 shooting splits for the game, eventually taking the 54-48 win over their hosts.
Mount Aloysius closes the regular season 12-12 overall and 9-8 in the AMCC, good for the #5 seed for the conference tournament. The Mounties will take on #4 Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday, February 20th. The Mounties and the Bobcats split their regular season series, with Pitt-Greensburg winning the most recent matchup 72-85.
