MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team opened up their Spring Trip, Sunday night, at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. They played a double-header against Colby-Sawyer and a single, nine-inning game against Susquehanna, so far, winning all three contests.
In Game One, they opened up with their highest scoring game of the season, with 16 runs against the Chargers. They saw three balls leave the yard, with
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) hitting his first homerun in a Mountie uniform and
Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) hitting his second and third homers of the season. The both drove in four runs. also had a stellar performance, going 4-for-4 and driving in three runs out of the leadoff spot.
Mount Aloysius found themselves in a tight contest in the night cap of the double-header. After they scored three runs in the first inning, they allowed just one run heading into the sixth with starter
Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa. / Harmony) still on the bump. The Chargers loaded the bases in the sixth, with no outs, causing Mount Aloysius to go to the bullpen and bring in
Joey DeRubeis (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona). That moved turned out to be clutch, as DeRubeis would strike out the next three batters and strand the bases loaded to get out of the jam. He added two more strikeouts and a groundout in the seventh inning, to earn his first career save and preserving the win for Maseto.
To start Monday's contest, the Mounties fell behind 5-0 over the first two and a half innings, staring in the face of a tough Susquehanna squad. Mount Aloysius got two runs back in the bottom of the third, on a little league style homer by
John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey). They added another in the fourth inning, on a major league homerun by
Zack Peck (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon), cutting the lead to 5-3. After the Riverhawks added insurance runs in the seventh inning and held the Mounties scoreless, the it was a 7-3 game with two frames left. Facing the four run deficit, the Mounties loaded the bases and Griffith again singled to plate two runs.
Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney) then singled to drive in another two runs, with both hits coming with two outs. After a scorless ninth and top of the tenth, Tunison returned to the plate, a runner in scoring position and one out. He went on to produce his second double of the day, driving in Brown from second base for a walk-off win, 8-7.
Despite the slow start over the first two weeks, the Mounties now find themselves on a three-game win streak. They will put that streak to the test, on Tuesday, with another matchup against Colby-Sawyer.
