Mountie Baseball Finishes Spring Trip Undefeated

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team wrapped up their 2024 Spring Trip, on Friday, with their seventh win in six days and a perfect 7-0 record. They improved to 9-6 overall with the seven-game win streak.

Mount Aloysius had a dominant finish to their week, scoring at least 16 runs in three of their final four contests and holding their opponents to three runs or less in three of the games. Their closest matchup came on Wednesday, when they topped Lesley, 8-3.

On Tuesday, the Mounties played Colby-Sawyer for the third time, this week, due to travel complications for Plymouth State. The Mounties seemed to enjoy the Charger pitching, beating them three times during the week. They got out to a 4-0 lead, with three RBIs from Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney). After Colby-Sawyer cut the lead to 4-2, in the top of the seventh inning, the Mountie offense exploded. Mount Aloysius scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh and five more in the eighth, extending their final lead to 16-3. John Luke Bailey (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley Area) earned the victory, on the mound, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs on six hits. The win was his second of the season.

In the Mounties win against Lesley, on Wednesday, they got a strong pitching performance from , who went 7.0 innings and allowed just one run and three hits. He also struck out a career-high, 13 batters. Hasse had some help, as the Mountie offense built him an early 4-0 lead, through three innings. Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) and Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, Md. / St. Mary's) each drove in two runs on the game, with Cook providing a 3-for-5 performance, including a homerun. While Lesley closed the gap to 6-3, in the eighth inning, the Mounties scored twice in the ninth to seal the victory, 8-3.

Thursday's game against Dean saw the Mounties face their biggest piece of adversity. In the bottom of the second inning, Dean scored three runs to grab the first lead of the game. Mount Aloysius responded with five runs in the top of the third inning, on a two-run single by John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey), and a bases-clearing double by Tunison, giving them a 5-3 lead. Dean then responded with four runs to grab a 7-5 lead, in the bottom of the third. Mount Aloysius knotted the game up at seven, in the seventh inning, when Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry) singled in Tunison and John Elias (Patton, Pa. / Cambria Heights). After a scoreless fram by Dean, the Mounties loaded the bases and saw three runners cross the plate, two via walks and a third courtesy of an Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa. / Harmony) single, giving them a 10-7 lead. In the ninth, Dean struggled against the Mountie offense, allowing them to score nine runs in the frame, two more on bases loaded walks and one on a hit by pitch. On top of the offensive output, the Mounties got 5.2 quality innings out of the bullpen from Tanner Abrams (Pleasantville, Pa. / Titusville). Abrams allowed no runs and just three hits in his appearance, earning the victory.

Mount Aloysius faced off against Albertus Magnus in Friday's early morning finale, and the Falcons struck quickly, scoring the first two runs of the game. The Mounties responded with RBIs by Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. / Chopticon) and Brown, tying the game at two after the first inning. That was just the beginning, as the Mounties scored at least once in all six of their at-bats, including five runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning. The offensive barrage put the Falcons on their heels and the Mounties stretched their lead to 16-3, by the seventh inning. They held the Falcons scoreless and sealed the victory.

The Mounties are scheduled to play their first game of the season, in Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, when they travel to Saint Vincent. The Bearcats have started the season 1-6, prior to this weekend's four-game series at the Apprentice School. Mount Aloysius and Saint Vincent split last season's double-header.
