GREENVILLE, Pa. -- On Sunday, the Mount Aloysius Men's Volleyball team returned from a 10-day break and traveled to Thiel (9-10, 3-1 AMCC) for a matchup with the Tomcats. While the sets were all close, the Mounties fell in straight sets.
Matthew Franz (Johnstown, Ohio / Bishop Hartley)Â led the Mounties with 15 kills and 14 digs, both game-highs. Setter,
Evan Schmidt (Loganville, Pa. /Â Dallastown Area), dished out 36 assists.
In the first set, the Mounties had two different leads, at 9-8 and 22-21. They also never trailed by more than two points. However, the Tomcats scored four of the final five points to down the Mounties 25-23 in the opener.
Once again, the second set was close, with neither team leading by more than three points. Mount Aloysius opened up a 5-2 lead, for their biggest advantage, but fell behind and ultimately lost the second set, 25-22.
Thiel grabbed control of the third set, sprinting to a 12-6 lead. While the Mounties worked their way back, they could not get closer than 19-16, falling 25-19.
While the Mounties committed less hitting errors than Thiel, the Tomcats still hit a better percentage. They hit .296 for the game, while the Mounties hit a solid .257. The .257 mark is the second highest of the season for Mount Aloysius. They committed 12 hitting errors, which also is tied for their best mark of the season.
Mount Aloysius will head back on the road, Wednesday, as they travel to Carlow. Mount Aloysius lost to the Celtics, last season, prior to Carlow joining the AMCC. Wednesday will mark their first meeting as conference foes.
