Mounties Earn Back-To-Back Wins Against Pittsburgh-Based Competition

Cresson, Pa. -- Mount Aloysius men's volleyball picked up their 7th and 8th wins of the season this week, defeating Carlow and Chatham without dropping a set. 

Leaders: 

- Junior Andrew Wlodarczyk (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) led the Mounties in kills, earning 22 across six sets of action.
- Sophomore Jason Freed (East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora) earned a team high 8 blocks across both games.
- Freshman Evan Schmidt (Loganville, Pa. , Dallastown Area) led the Mounties with 77 assists. 

Game One (Carlow):

How It Happened:

- Both teams stayed even throughout the opening of the first set, putting together no more than three consecutive points. 
- At 15-all, Tayshaun Johnson (Uniondale, N.Y., Uniondale) would earn three kills and an ace as the Mounties would capture six of the next seven points. 
- Carlow would call a timeout to stop the bleeding, but the Mounties would maintain their advantage and close the set 25-20. 
- The Celtics would struggle to open the second, recording four errors in the opening eight points. 
- The Mounties would again maintain their lead, keeping the four point separation until midway through the set. 
- Five more Celtic errors would help the Mounties take a 21-11 lead into the final points of the set, closing the second behind a Wlodarczyk kill 25-14. 
- Although the Celtics would commit fewer errors, the Mounties leap out to a 14-5 lead, with Matthew Franz (Johnstown, Ohio, Bishop Hartley) joining Johnson and Wlodarczyk in recording Mountie kills. 
- A late Carlow four-point run would give the Mounties some trouble, but a final kill from Wlodarczyk would end the match 25-18. 

Into the Box Score:

- The Mounties would record a .360 hitting percent as a team, including a high of .533 in the second set.
- The Mounties led Carlow in every statistical category for the match.

Game Two (Chatham):

How It Happened:

- The first set was a tug-of-war, with both teams answering three and four point runs from their opponent through the first 25 points of action. 
- Up 14-11, the pace of the set would change, with points going back-and-forth as both programs took only a point at a time. 
- Three Mountie errors would put Chatham down only two in the final moments of the set. 
- Refocusing, the Mounties would earn three kills on the next five points to win the first 25-20. 
- Maintaining momentum, the Mounties would carve out an early set lead, despite Chatham's consistent disruption of extended runs. 
- At 13-8, Wlodarczyk would make his presence known, recording five kills across the next eight points to give his team the 18-10 lead. 
- Up 24-16, the Mounties would face a sudden five point run from Chatham, tightening up down the stretch.
- Despite the increased pressure, Johnson would win the set for the Mounties, recording a final kill to win the second 25-21. 
- Trading points through the opening of the third, the Mounties would earn a 15-10 lead following three Chatham errors. 
- The five point separation would be protected by the Mounties, going into the final points of the set leading 23-17. 
- A Chatham error and a block from Freed would end the match in the Mountie's favor, 25-17. 

Into the Box Score:

- Both teams handled serve well, with Chatham recording the sole ace of the contest. 
- The Mounties earned eight more kills than the visitors.

- Mount Aloysius men's volleyball travels to Latrobe to take on Saint Vincent this Tuesday, March 26th. Saint Vincent enters the contest 15-7, coming off a 5 set win over Penn State Altoona.
