GROTTOES, Va. -- Over the Weekend, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team once again traveled south, this time to Mary Baldwin (3-4) for a three-game series. Mount Aloysius (2-5) swept the first day of the series before falling in the finale.
In Game One, the Mounties got a dominant performance on the mound from
Chris Hasse (Johnstown, Pa. /Â Westmont Hilltop), who went 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out four Squirrels. They also added some offensive out put with two extra-base hits from
Zack Peck (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon), including a homerun, and a 3-for-4 effort from
John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey), who drove in three runs. Despite giving up three runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Mounties held on for a 7-5 victory and their first win of the season.
Mount Aloysius would fall behind in Game Two, but not for very long. The Squirrels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Mounties scored three times in the third to take the lead for good on their way to an 8-3 victory. Mary Baldwin was unable to keep the Mounties from scoring in the third through sixth innings, as they tallied at least one run in each frame. The Mounties also got solid pitching from starterÂ
John Luke Bailey (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley Area) and reliever
Anthony Maseto (Cherry Tree, Pa. / Harmony). Maseto earned his first career save by tossing 3.0 innings out of the bullpen and allowing just one hit.
Game Three saw the Mounties squander the lead on multiple occasions.Â
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. /Â Chopticon) produced a strong performance over the first six innings, allowing just one Squirrel runner to score. He also hit a solo homerun, in the fifth inning, to put the Mounties ahead 4-1. However, in the seventh inning, the Mounties allowed four runs on four hits and an error, leading to Mary Baldwin taking a 5-4 lead. Mount Aloysius took another lead, in the top of the ninth inning, with three runs, including a two-RBI single from
Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. /Â Osbourn Park). In their final at-bat, the Squirrels got to the Mountie 'pen again, scoring three runs on just one hit, including a game-winning, walk-off, hit by pitch. The Mounties fell, 8-7.
The Mounties will head back to the state of Virginia, on Wednesday, for a matchup with nationally-ranked, Shenandoah. The Hornets are 9-1 and went 4-0 over the weekend. The Mounties are 1-11 all-time against the Hornets, with their only win coming back in 2021.
