WINCHESTER, Va. -- On Thursday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled to Winchester for their annual non-conference meeting against Shenandoah (10-1). For the first time in program history, the Mounties (2-6) would be playing against the number one ranked team in the country, as Shenandoah became ranked #1 in the D3baseball.com poll, at the start of the week. The Hornets played to their rank, dominating the Mounties and winning, 14-1.
Mount Aloysius picked up the first run of the game, as
Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) led off the second inning with his first homerun of the season, giving the Mounties a 1-0 lead. The struggles started in the bottom half of the second inning for the visitors, as Shenandoah scored three times to go up 3-1. They followed that with three runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth inning, while allowing no Mountie hits, opening up a 10-1 lead.
The Mounties squandered chances to score in both the fifth and sixth innings, after getting leadoff doubles from
Jackson Kozlovac (Portage, Pa. / Portage) and
Zack Peck (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon). Shenandoah added four insurance runs over their final three at-bats, leading to the 14-1 score. Mount Aloysius made one last attempt and loaded the bases in the ninth, but stranded all three baserunners.
On the day, Mount Aloysius used seven pitchers, with only
Matthew Watkins (Broad Top City, Pa. / Tussey Mountain) not giving up a run, as he pitched the fifth inning. They used 24 total players and saw eight of the nine starters get subbed for in the late innings.
Mount Aloysius will now head south for their spring trip to Myrtle Beach. Their first action is scheduled for Sunday evening against Colby-Sawyer.
