Mounties Still Setting Pace in AMCC Baseball Race

PITTSBURGH -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team traveled to face AMCC-rival, La Roche, in a doubleheader. After the Mounties (18-9, 8-2 AMCC) produced a come-from-behind victory in Game One, the Redhawks (9-16, 5-5 AMCC) returned the favor in Game Two, as the two teams split the doubleheader. Mount Aloysius is currently atop the AMCC standings, with the 8-2 record.

In Game One, La Roche jumped out to a three-run lead with three first inning runs. While the Mounties cut the lead to 3-1 on an Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) sacrifice fly in the second inning, the Redhawks responded with one of their own, chasing the Mountie starter, Chris Hasse (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop).

Matthew Watkins (Broad Top City, Pa. / Tussey Mountain) stabilized the Mounties, out of the bullpen, giving them 6.0 scoreless innings and their offense ample time to mount a comeback. It started in the fourth inning, as McDermott drove in two more runs on a double, cutting the Redhawk lead to 4-3. In the sixth inning, they added a tying run on a Redhawk error, which was followed by a  RBI single, giving the Mounties a 5-4 lead. Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) drove in two more insurance runs, in the seventh, giving the Mounties a 7-4 lead. Watkins then delivered a 1-2-3 inning to finish off the Game One victory.

Mount Aloysius looked to continue their momentum in Game Two, with McDermott driving in two more runs, on a double, and giving the Mounties a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Zack Peck (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) added an RBI triple in the fourth inning, growing the lead to 3-0. La Roche responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the lead back to 3-2.

Disaster struck in the seventh for Mount Aloysius. Heading into the frame with a 3-2 lead, the Mounties saw the Redhawks score five runs on three hits and an error, while still leaving the bases loaded and leaving a bigger disaster behind. However, that was all La Roche needed, as the Mounties were held hitless in the final two frames, falling 7-3.

McDermott had a big day for the Mountie offense, driving in five of their ten total runs and going 2-for-5. Watkins was the star on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out five batters in his relief appearance.

Mount Aloysius is scheduled to play on Wednesday, at Lancaster Bible, in a non-conference matchup. They will return to conference play, on Saturday, when they visit Hilbert. The Hawks are 16-9 overall, with a 5-3 record in conference play. They are set to play at La Roche, on Thursday.
