Mounties Clipped by Chargers

LANCASTER, Pa. -- On Wednesday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team stepped out of conference play and traveled to Lancaster Bible for a single, nine-inning game. Despite leading early, the Mounties (18-10) fell to the Chargers (17-12-1).

Mount Aloysius grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, courtesy of an RBI groundout by John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey). While the Chargers turned the play into two outs, Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry) scored before the final out was recorded. The Mounties added a second run, in the second inning, on another RBI groundout. This time, the RBI came from Griffin Tunison (Luthvle Timon, Md. / Dulaney), giving the Mounties a 2-0 lead.

Despite the early success, the Mountie offense went cold for the following five frames. During that time, Lancaster Bible took advantage and grabbed a 6-2 lead. They added a run in the third, two more runs in the fifth, and three more in the seventh inning, giving the Mounties six outs to work with.

In the eighth, Tyler Weber (Hollsopple, Pa. / Conemaugh Twp) delivered a leadoff, pinch-hit, home run to cut the Charger lead to 6-3. The homer was the first of Weber's collegiate career.

Mount Aloysius would push another run across in the eighth inning, with just one out, but their last five batters went down in order. Lancaster Bible struck out the side in the ninth inning, to seal the 6-4 victory.

Joining Weber's offense, Bushey produced a 2-for-4 day and scored two of the four Mountie runs. Starter, Jeremy Eck (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County), tossed 5.0 inning and allowed just two earned runs on five hits and a walk, but was saddled with the loss.

The Mounties are back in action, this weekend, when they travel to Hilbert for a conference matchup with the Hawks. Hilbert is scheduled to travel to La Roche, on Thursday, before hosting the Mounties on Saturday. They are currently 16-9 overall, with a 5-3 record in AMCC play.
