BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team travled to Hilbert, on Saturday, for a conference matchup. The Mounties (19-11, 9-3 AMCC) split the contests with the Hawks (19-10, 8-4 AMCC), each earning a come-from-behind victory.
Game One saw fireworks very early. Mount Aloysius scored three runs in the first inning, thanks to a three-run homerun by
John Griffith (Bryans Road, Md. / Henry E. Lackey), his third of the season. Hilbert answered, with back-to-back RBI hits in the bottom of the first, making the score 3-2. Both teams would settle in on the mound, throwing four straight scoreless frames from there.
Mount Aloysius added two more runs, in the sixth inning, extending their lead to 5-2. The first run scored on an error, whileÂ
Owen McDermott (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) singled to drive home the second run of the inning. However, in the bottom of the seventh, Hilbert's Nolan Evans hit a game-tying, three-run homer to send the game to extra innings. The Hawks would load the bases in the ninth inning, pushing the winning run across and grabbing Game One, 6-5.
Offense was hot again, in the first inning of Game Two. Mount Aloysius scored twice, withÂ
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. /Â Chopticon) doubling home
Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa. / Derry), and Griffith driving home Quade with an RBI groundout. They were answered with one Hilbert run, in the bottom of the first, making it 2-1.
Hilbert would take the lead, in the fourth inning, with two RBI hits, going ahead 3-2. This lead became important, due to Game One going into extra innings, Game Two adjusted to a seven-inning contest. That left the Mounties with only nine more outs to work with. They used most of them, waiting until the seventh inning to make noise.
Zack Peck (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon)Â led off the frame with a double, then with one out McDermott singled to drive him home and tie the game. With two runners on, McDermott scored on a Bushey RBI single, giving the Mounties a 4-3 lead. The Mounties would score their fifth run, on a Hawk error, and Griffith would single, with two outs, extending the Mountie lead to 6-3. Hilbert garnered one hit in the bottom of the frame, but left the man on base, giving the Mounties a 6-3 victory.
Matthew Watkins (Broad Top City, Pa. /Â Tussey Mountain)Â made his third straight scoreless appearance, out of the bullpen in Game Two. Watkins earned the victory, going 3.1 innings and allowing two hits. He lowered his ERA to 2.78 and improved to 4-0.
Mount Aloysius is set to host Penn College, in a non-conference matchup on Monday afternoon. They will turn around and host Penn State Altoona, on Wednesday, for an AMCC-doubleheader. The Lions are 14-15 overall, with a 5-5 record in AMCC play, following a split with Penn State Behrend on Saturday.
