Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Mounties Run Out of Steam in Five-Set Thriller

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Women's Volleyball team played host to Lycoming in a non-conference matchup. The game was tagged the Sideline Cancer game, with both teams raising money for a great cause, in addition to the match. Despite making a comeback, the Mounties fell in five sets.

In the first set, the Warriors (3-4) started out with the advantage, going up six points early. The Mounties did fight back and took a 15-14 lead, which led to a Lycoming timeout. The timeout proved fruitful and the Warriors scored the next eight points, opening up a seven point lead on the Mounties. That stretch put the Mounties behind and saw them drop the set, 25-17.

Fireworks were all across the second set of the match, with the Mounties holding the lead for the majority. Mount Aloysius opened up the first three-point lead, 15-12, as the teams traded points early. That sparked some sustained runs from both sides, as the Warriors scored five of the next six, followed by five straight from the Mounties, and another five in a row from Lycoming.  The Warriors would get to set point, 24-22, but then saw the Mounties take a significant shift in momentum, scoring five of the next six points to win 27-25. They saw three kills, to go along with three Matie Rupp (York, Pa. / West York) aces, to get them the set and tie the game at 1-1.

Lycoming flew out of the gates in the third set, opening up a 6-1 lead. While the Mounties fought, the Warriors kept them at a distance. Mount Aloysius closed the gap to three points, 22-19, but that was as close as they got, dropping the third set to fall behind, 2-1.

The fourth set look pretty similar to the third, just with the opposite results. Mount Aloysius jumped out this time with a 5-1 lead. While the Warriors got it back to one point, at 9-8, the Mounties took back control and grew their lead to as many as 10 points. Lycoming attempted to close the gap, but only got to 18 points before the Mounties finished off the set and sent the game to a win-or-go-home fifth set.

Despite a quick 3-1 start by the Mounties, in the fifth set, they were unable to keep up the momentum from the fourth set. The Warriors capitalized on seven Mountie miscues, which helped them on their way to winning the final set, 15-7, in dominant fashion.

Molly Richards (Naples, Fla. / Naples) led the way for the Mounties, with a game-high, 22 kills, to go along with a team-high, 26 digs. Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) added 15 kills and four blocks, for the Mounties. Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) dished out 22 assists, which tied her career-high.

The Mounties will travel to McDaniel College, this weekend, for three matches. On Friday, they will take on SUNY Cobleskill, before facing off against Notre Dame (Md.) and McDaniel, on Saturday.
