WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Over the weekend, the Mount Aloysius Women's Volleyball team traveled to McDaniel College, for a tri-match hosted by the Green Terror. On Friday, the Mounties faced SUNY Cobleskill, before matching up with McDaniel and Notre Dame (Md.), on Saturday. Mount Aloysius had a solid weekend, pull out two victories in the three games.
Game One vs. SUNY Cobleskill
Mount Aloysius got some early fight from the Tigers, in their opening match. Cobleskill led for a majority of the first set, holding a 19-15 lead, their biggest of the day. However, the Mounties found their footing, outscoring the Tigers, 9-2, and winning the first set, 25-21. During the stretch,
Molly Richards (Naples, Fla. / Naples)Â had three of her game-high, 15 kills, to help the Mounties take the 1-0 lead.
Over the final two sets, the Tigers scored just 17 total points, falling 25-7 and 25-10. The Mounties hit .462 or better in both sets, committing just four hitting errors. Mount Aloysius hit .337 for the game, which is their best mark of the season.
Game Two vs. Notre Dame (Md.)
The Mounties continued with their hot play in Saturday's first match against Notre Dame. While the Gators showed some promise and hit over .200 in the first set, the Mounties overcame another first set deficit to win, 25-23.
In the second set, the Mounties showcased their dominance, earning a 25-11 victory. They hit .423 in the set, with 14 kills and just three errors. Notre Dame made a push in the third set, but the Mounties never trailed. The Gators tied the set at 19, but Mount Aloysius scored six of the last seven points to win their second match of the weekend, 3-0.
Game Three vs. McDaniel
Mount Aloysius faced their toughest test, in their final game, facing the hosts. The Mounties' hitting was the tale of the stats, in the five-set match. In the first set, the Mounties had just four kills and nine errors, leading to a 1-0 deficit. They responded with seven kills and three errors, in the second set, to go along with seven service aces, winning the set, 25-11. McDaniel had a negative hitting percentage in each of the first two sets.
With the match tied 1-1, Mount Aloysius once again struggled to hit against the Green Terror, with more errors than kills. McDaniel also found their swings, tallying 13 kills, on the way to a 25-21 victory to gain a 2-1 lead in the match. The Mounties tied the match at two, with their best hitting set of the game. They picked up 14 kills and overcame a 13-5 deficit, on their way to the set victory, 25-23.
In the final set, playing to 15, McDaniel hammered away 12 kills and hit .364, to win the set. Mount Aloysius had five kills, but they also committed three errors, accounting for the Green Terror's other three points. McDaniel won the final set, 15-11.
The Barr twins each had a solid game, in the loss.
Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Â Shaler)Â led the Mounties with 15 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. She also served up four aces.
Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Â Shaler)Â had a team-high, 20 digs, and was the only Mountie in double-digits.
Mount Aloysius improved to 4-5 on the weekend, courtesy of the first two matches. They will stay on the road, Tuesday, when they matchup against Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes come into the match, 3-9 on the season, following a 1-2 weekend. Geneva won last year's matchup in three sets.
