Cresson, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team fell to the visiting Geneva Golden Tornadoes by a score of 2-1 this Wednesday, September 11th.
The game would open back and forth across opening minutes of action, with neither team finding consistent looks early. Geneva would earn two shots on goal inside the first twenty minutes, while the Mounties would have their sole first half shot attempt go off the top crossbar thirteen minutes into the game. Geneva would not need many attempts before finding the back of the net, scoring the opening goal in the 22nd minute. Geneva's efficiency would continue from there, as the team would put one more shot on goal before scoring again on just their fifth attempt of the game. The late goal would send the teams into halftime with the visitors leading 2-0.
The Mounties would open the second with more intensity, and both teams would trade early shots on goal. A foul just outside Geneva's box would set up freshman midfielder
Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain, Putnam Science Academy), who would convert the free kick to give the Mounties their sole goal of the contest. Now flowing offensively, the Mounties would earn more looks at the goal, including a exceptional cross nearly converted by
Braden Callahan (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg), forcing an acrobatic save from the Geneva goalkeeper.
This attempt would prove to be the Mounties' final shot of the game; scrambling for looks in the final twenty-five minutes of play, the Mounties would fend off four Geneva attempts as the game came to a close, but fail to find a look at the goal. The game would end with a final yellow card as Geneva looked to bleed the block, putting the final score at 2-1 to the visitors.
The Mounties return to action in West Virginia on Saturday, September 14th, to take on Bethany College. Bethany enters the contest 0-4 overall, coming off a 3-0 defeat to Randolph-Macon.
