Mounties Swept Up by Hot-Hitting Tornadoes

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- On Tuesday, the Mount Aloysius Women's Volleyball team went on the road, as they traveled to Geneva to take on the Golden Tornadoes. While the Mounties started out hitting well, Geneva was even hotter and downed the Mounties in straight sets.

The first set was a back and forth affair in the early going. The two teams stayed within two points of each other until Geneva grabbed a 16-13 lead. The Mounties were unable to counter the momentum, as the Tornadoes outscored the Mounties 9-4 to win the set decisively, 25-18.

In the second set, it started out identical to the first, with Geneva grabbing the first, three-point lead, at 16-13. However, the Mounties did not go away easily this time, as three points was the biggest advantage in the set. Mount Aloysius got six kills down the stretch, including three from . Ultimately, the Tornadoes held off the visitors, taking the second set, 25-23.

Geneva came out swinging in the third set and opened up a 15-5 lead, looking to end the match easily. The two squads split the next 18 points, giving Geneva a 24-14 lead and match point. The Mounties continued to fight, going on a spirited run, led by three kills by Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) and two aces from Matie Rupp (York, Pa. / West York), cutting the Geneva lead to 24-21. The Tornadoes would end the Mountie rally there, finishing off the set 25-21 and the match, 3-0.

Richards led the Mounties with 12 kills, to go along with 13 digs. Barr racked up 10 kills and just one hitting error, for a .500 hitting percentage. Her sister, Madison Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler), led the defense as the libero, adding 13 digs to match Richards' game-high total.

The Mounties will now take a week off before traveling to play Washington & Jefferson, next Tuesday. The Presidents are currently 5-7 on the season, with games against AMCC-foes, Carlow and Penn State Altoona, before next week's matchup against the Mounties.
