Cresson, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team recorded a 3-0 win over the visiting Saint Vincent Bearcats this Tuesday, Sept. 17.
The later start time seemed to work in the Mounties' favor, as the hosts would see a nearly ideal first half of play. Both teams traded possession in the first ten minutes of action, feeling each other out while moving the ball from end to end without any looks at the goal. Saint Vincent would earn the first shot of the game at the twelve minute mark, with goalkeeperÂ
Sam Denchfield (Truro, England, Loughborough College) scooping up the attempt without worry. This shot would be the only Bearcat attempt in the half, as the Mounties secured possession comfortably in their opponents' side of the field for the rest of the first. Finding a handful of shot attempts across the next several minutes, a perfectly played through ball from freshman midfielderÂ
Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain, Putnam Science Academy) would set up junior forwardÂ
Gonzalo Terricabris (Catalonia, Spain, Garbi Pere Verges) for the first goal of the game. Â
Fired up after opening up scoring, the Mountie offense would increase their pace, building their lead just four minutes later as junior midfielderÂ
Daniel Irujo (Pamplona, Spain, Sagrado Corazon) ripped a shot into the upper ninety from outside the box to put the hosts up two. Assisted by senior midfielderÂ
Louis Bez (Bordeaux, France, Lycée Sainte-Marie de la Bastide), the goal would force Saint Vincent to shift strategies, slowing down the pace of the game throughout the rest of the half in response to the Mounties sudden offensive output. While the Bearcat defense looked to be holding heading into halftime, a chaotic exchange inside the visitor's eighteen with just six seconds left to play in the first would end with a goal from freshman forwardÂ
Bill Dohren (Stockholm, Sweden, Rudbecks Gymnasium), again assisted by Bez.Â
Holding a three goal lead going into the second, the Mounties would find a similar offensive pace to the first, recording 10 shots across the closing forty-five minutes of action. Despite the number of looks, the hosts were unable to convert any of the attempts, maintaining their three goal separation throughout the half. Although the Bearcats would quadruple their shot attempts from the first half, the Mountie back line held strong, with Denchfield and the defense recording their first shut-out of the season. An 87th minute Saint Vincent attempt would sail wide, and the game would close with the hosts taking the 3-0 win.Â
The Mounties improve to 3-3-1 on the season, while Saint Vincent falls to 1-3-3. The Mounties stay home this weekend, hosting the Washington & Jefferson Presidents this Saturday, Sept. 21. W&J enters the contest 2-3 overall, coming off a 0-2 loss to Penn State Harrisburg.Â
