Mounties Defeat Presidents

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's soccer program earned the 3-0 victory over the Washington & Jefferson Presidents this Saturday, Sept. 21.

Despite a storm delay holding up opening proceedings, the Mounties came out firing, earning an early advantage after a 6th minute W&J foul in the box. Junior Gonzalo Terricabris (Catalonia, Spain, Garbi Pere Verges) would convert the penalty, putting the Mounties up early, forcing the Presidents to forgo their early physical play. The first would grind on as both teams sought to maintain possession, each finding a handful of shots on goal scooped up by the goalkeepers. The first half would grind to an end with just five total shot attempts across both teams, with the Mounties entering halftime still holding a 1-0 lead.

The opening minutes of the second would prove just as successful as the first, with seniors Louis Bez (Bordeaux, France, Lycée Sainte-Marie de la Bastide) and Luke Traynor (London, England, Woodhouse College) setting up junior Martin Montoya (Madrid, Spain, Colegio Santísimo Sacramento)'s 50th minute goal, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage. Flustered by the goal, W&J would see a player sent off for two yellow cards, putting the visitors down a man while trying to overcome the two goal deficit. Just six minutes after the second yellow, the Mounties would score the dagger, with defender Martin Donner (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl) putting one in to put the hosts up 3-0. Both teams would trade shots over the final 30 minutes of action, but fail to find the back of the net, ending the game in a Mountie win.

The Mounties travel to Alfred State this Saturday, Sept. 28, to open up AMCC regular season play. Alfred State enters the game 6-2 this season, coming off a 4-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill. Alfred State sits as the defending AMCC Tournament Champions, defeating the Mounties in a penalty shootout at last year's championship game.
