Alfred, N.Y. -- The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team suffered an 0-3 defeat to the Alfred State Pioneers in the first game of the AMCC 2024 regular season.
The first half would be a back and forth affair, with both teams pushing forward and earning shot attempts. Despite both teams putting attempts on target, both goalkeepers would hold strong, sending both programs into half time tied at 0-0. While the shot attempts and saves would stay even across the first, Alfred State would commit to an aggressive, physical style of play, out-fouling the Mounties eleven to five.
The physicality would pay dividends for the hosts in the second half, as the Pioneers would earn the first goal of the contest on a 56th minute attempt. Struggling to find offensive opportunities, the Mounties would give up another goal just six minutes later, falling into an 0-2 hole with under thirty minutes to play. Although the visitors would earn a handful of shot attempts, Alfred State would hold the Mounties scoreless, before putting in the 86th minute dagger to take the contest 3-0. The Mounties fall to 4-4-1 on the season, and 0-1 in AMCC play.
The Mounties continue conference play this Tuesday, Oct. 1 against the Carlow Celtics. Carlow enters the contest 2-6 on the season, coming off a 0-1 loss to AMCC opponent Hilbert.
