Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Mountie Volleyball Wins Twice in Quad Match

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Saturday, the Mount Aloysius Women's Volleyball team hosted La Roche, Penn State Harrisburg, and Waynesburg, in a quad match. The Mounties played both Penn State Harrisburg and Waynesburg, coming away with 3-1 victories against both opponents.

Game One vs. Waynesburg
Mount Aloysius looked like they would have some early success against the Yellow Jackets, jumping out to a 7-4 lead, with four kills from Molly Richards (Naples, Fla. / Naples) and two more from Mackenzie Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler). However, the Mounties struggled from there, falling behind 15-10. While they fought back and tied the set at 18, Waynesburg scored the final seven points to down the Mounties, 25-18 and take a 1-0 lead. The difference in the first set looked to be the hitting numbers, as the Yellow Jackets only committed one error, while the Mounties committed ten.

Each of the next two sets took fortitude from both teams, as they played past the standard 25 point number. In the second set, the Mounties held on for a 32-30 win, despite being a point away from losing the set, when Waynesburg led 29-28. Then, in the third set, the Mounties staved off the Jackets, again. Waynesburg led the set 24-23 and Mount Aloysius again came back, this time winning 27-25. Mount Aloysius out-hit Waynesburg in each set, with 14 more total kills.

Waynesburg grabbed a 7-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Mounties responded with 14 of the next 16 points to grab a 19-9 lead. From there, they would hold off a late Yellow Jacket rally to win the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.

Richards led the Mounties with 20 kills and 29 digs, both game-highs. Barr was right behind her with 19 kills. Setter, Reghyn Wilson (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt), had a game-high, 27 assists.

Game Two vs. Penn State Harrisburg
Game Two started to look similar to Game One for the Mounties, as the first set went just a little bit long. The Mounties never trailed in the set by more than one point and ultimately won the set, 26-24.

Mount Aloysius kept the momentum in the second set, as they only trailed twice, 1-0 and 14-13. Harrisburg made a small push near the end of the set, but Mount Aloysius got side-out kills from Barr and Matie Rupp (York, Pa. / West York), giving them a 25-21 set victory and a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, the Mounties looked like they would be able to win in straight sets, but the Lions had other plans. Mount Aloysius led for a majority of the set and trailed for the first time, 20-19. Unfortunately for the hosts, they wouldn't lead again and the Lions scored the final three points to win 25-22 and make the match score, two sets to one.

With the Lions still facing defeat, the Mounties got out ahead and led, until Harrisburg scored five straight points to take an 18-16 lead. The Mounties responded again with six of the next seven points to turn the table, 22-19. Both teams evenly split the next six points, leading to the Mounties earning a 25-22 win and a 3-1 match victory.

Game Two saw Richards again post game-highs in kills (16) and digs (24). Barr was once again close, with 15 kills of her own. This time, Abby Brink (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) led the Mounties with 21 assists and five service aces.

Mount Aloysius will head back out on the road, Wednesday, for their first of six straight games away from home. They will travel to Latrobe for a matchup with Saint Vincent. The Bearcats are currently 5-9 on the season, following a 3-1 victory over AMCC-foe, Carlow, on Friday night.
