Cresson, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's tennis program fell to the Alfred University Saxons this Friday, September 6th, in their home opener. 

The Mounties faced a strong challenge immediately from the defending Empire 8 champions, competing against tricky doubles teams up and down the lineup. Despite some close exchanges and solid net play, all three Mountie doubles teams would fall 6-2 to their opponents, giving the visitors their first team point of the meet. 

The Saxons would jump out to early leads in singles as well, save for one singles. Sophomore captain Caylie Conlon (New Paris, PA, Chestnut Ridge) would find success from the baseline against her opponent, combining heavy forehands with penetrating backhand slices to capture the first set 6-2. Conlon's opponent attempted a response with increased net pressure on slice approaches, but a steady mix of lobs and passes would keep Alfred off kilter throughout the second. Finding rhythm on serve, Conlon would take the match 6-2 6-2 in clinical fashion, giving the Mounties their sole team point with the top flight win. 

The Mounties face a quick turnaround, returning to action tomorrow against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. Geneva enters the contest 1-0 coming off a clean sweep of the Carlow University Celtics.
