PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's basketball program improved to 3-3 in conference play with Saturday's 75-60 win over the Carlow University Celtics (2-10, 1-3 AMCC). Four Mounties would score in double figures, with forward
De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin) leading his team with 20 points.
The Mounties would start the game hot, jumping out to a 16 point lead after just five minutes of play behind four-of-six shooting behind the arc. The hot start would prove game changing as a lid seemed to appear on the basket, leading to a nearly three and a half minute scoreless stretch for both programs. The Mounties would go 0-11 from three for the remainder of the half, while Carlow would also fail to hit a shot from behind the arc on eight attempts. Despite the shooting struggles, Carlow's interior play would prove more efficient than the Mounties, and the Celtics would shrink the deficit to just seven going in to halftime.
With both teams struggling to convert from the floor, the second half would develop into a war of attrition from the free throw line. The Mounties would convert at the charity stripe, hitting 13-14 free throws in the half to build their lead as the second went on. While Carlow would get ten free throw attempts in the half, the Celtics would go just 30% from the line, negating any attempt at a comeback. This free throw advantage for the Mounties was bolstered by second-chance possessions, as the visitors would grab 16 more rebounds than the hosts across the game. Guard
Will Hagwood (Willowick, Ohio, South) would set his season high in the game, grabbing 14 boards to go along with 17 points and 2 steals. In addition to leading the Mountie scoring effort, Haggans would prove especially effective on the offensive glass, taking down six offensive rebounds in the game. Winning both the rebounding and the free throw game, the Mounties would cruise to a 75-60 victory, improving to 5-8 overall this season.
The Mounties return to action on Wednesday, Jan 15, taking on Penn State Schuylkill in Schuylkill Haven. The Lions enter the game 8-7 this season with a 6-1 record in the PSUAC, coming off a 71-123 loss to Division I opponent Cornell University.
