CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius men's basketball program secured an AMCC victory this Wednesday, Jan 8, against the visiting Alfred State Pioneers (2-11, 1-3 AMCC).
The Mountie men would put together a dominant first half offensive performance, built around solid team shooting splits. The Pioneers would struggle to cover the perimeter, leaving the Mounties to shoot 19 three pointers across the first twenty minutes of action. The Mounties would make the most of the opportunity, hitting 42% of their shots from deep. Despite the hosts holding their opponents to 42% shooting from the inside, the Pioneers would also find success from deep, going 7-11 from three in the first. GuardÂ
Will Hagwood (Willowick, Ohio, South) would be the star of the show for the Mounties, putting up a team-high 22 points in the first half, shooting 6-8 from three to send his team into halftime with a 17 point lead.Â
Rebounding would also play a key role for the Mounties, as the hosts would grab 21 more boards than the Pioneers, extending possessions with 21 offensive rebounds. ForwardÂ
De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin) would fill the stat sheet on both sides of the court, recording a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, adding in 3 blocks and 4 steals.Â
The second half would see the Mountie offense cool, while the Pioneers would grind out a short lived comeback, cutting the deficit to twelve after five minutes of play. In the end, the Mountie defense would seal the win, holding the visitors to 32% from the field and just 1-12 from three, ending the match up in a 17-point Mount Aloysius victory. The Mounties improve to 4-8 overall this season, and 2-3 in AMCC play.
The Mounties return to action in Pittsburgh this Saturday, Jan 11, against conference opponent Carlow. The Celtics enter the contest 2-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play, coming off a 69-74 loss to Hilbert College.
